Chapter 7 - Art is dead
Pope Pius III received Niccolò Machiavelli who reported on his investigation into the death of Cardinal Girolamo Savonarola and the footprints the murderer left in and out of the cathedral.
“In addition to the footprints, the cardinal who committed this murder also left his hat behind. This is going to be fairly easy to spot,” concluded Machiavelli.
Pope Pius III was sceptical.
“I don’t know about that. The last time we employed this method, we convicted the wrong guy. A heretic perhaps, but surely not a murderer.”
“Your Holiness, this is the best chance we have got to catch the killer. I implore you to let me try my method once more.”
“I am inclined to give you another opportunity, but not today. Besides the cardinals have already voted on the issue. One of them remembered that it was not Titian but Michelangelo who did the battle of the centaurs so the cardinals decided Skanky Burns should be decapitated too. And so he was, half an hour ago.”

That evening the Medicis met to decide on their plans.
“With Savonarola dead, I can safely return to Florence and restore our rule there”, Piero de Medici said to his two years younger brother Giovanni.
Giovanni replied.
“And I can strengthen our position here. Pope Pius III is frail. He won’t last that long. And we are young. With you as the prince in Florence and me as the pope we can unite entire Italy under the Medici rule.”
“OK, I’ll leave for Florence at ten PM tonight. I should get there by morning and you’ll get the word from me in a couple of days.”

The rain started again just before dawn. The deacon that went into the cathedral to make it ready for the morning service, discovered on the altar, under the cross, the dead body of Gamecube64, who was apparently slashed with a butcher knife. His internal organs were also missing.
When Machiavelli came, he immediately recognised the familiar footprints in the mud outside the cathedral. They were again visible in spite of the rain.
“I am going to nail him now”, thought Machiavelli.
Cardinal Giovanni de Medici soon arrived.
“Oh, my poor brother. He was supposed to leave Rome for Florence at 10 PM last night. He must have been murdered before that time.”
“But it is impossible”, protested Machiavelli, “the footprints wouldn’t have survived that long.”
“I’m telling you what I know to help you find my brother’s killer.”
“Hmm, if the footprints were left several hours ago, the killer must have been a very heavy person. Now he won’t escape me.”
