Where did I say I was surprised? All I'm saying is that I understand the motivation for Bush's refusal to meet with Howard and that I don't find the reaction petty. Upon analysis, I find it rather clever, actually.

Should Conservative parties from Canada or Britain not distance themselves from the naked emperor in the sands of Iraq, you will be guaranteed of Liberal/Labour governments in these countries for the next decade or so.

Whether Conservatives are stupid enough to go along with Bush in everything that has gone on is a litmus test for whether they should be given a sniff of power.

Conservatives are not very fussed about an invite from Mr. Bush. It is an invite from the Queen (or GG) that is at issue.

Iwonder if Drake realises that this will only serve to increase the Tory support in the polls?

I think it's really brilliant that Bush would want to be seen by the British public (who alread think that Blair is Bush's assmonkey) as dictating what constitutes acceptable political discourse in their country.



I also think the entire Bush administration thinks that if they don't listen to criticism then it means that they're doing a great job. Either that or they really do burst into tears when somebody tells them they're wrong...

I agree to a certain extent (on the attitude of the electorate in Canada and the UK), but I disagree that the Conservatives are going to get a sniff at power because of this, in the UK at least. I don't see Howard becoming PM anytime soon. If he does become PM because of this, then more power to him. If he doesn't, however, the Tories are going to have his head soon enough for destroying relations with the Republicans for no discernable gain.

What are the Tories going to do foreign policy-wise if they gain power at the expense of gaining the ire of the US administration? Are they going to completely reverse course and embrace Europe? Or are they just going to sit back and do nothing until Labor comes back in to remove them?
