The box surrounding the unit that forms its slot on the units bitmap is too thin. That's the problem, if you can please fix it. I'll try to incorporate the updated units in the final version (I currently have a functional marine, but I do think yours is better, and an SOG 'scout' type could help). BTW, please download the beta and tell me what you think.

@patine:
Yeah, I see the problem, about two pixels width too small. I've hopefully fixed it now. I've put the Marine, Grunt and SOG unit together to make it easier.
http://apolyton.net/upload/view.php?file=55820_VietnamUnits.GIF

I hope this fixes the problem.

I'll download and play the beta asap, only problem is that my pc with civ 2 installed isn't plugged in, as I'm taking it with me to university. However, I should be able to play it this weekend.

@jimpanse:
I love the graphic for the embassy

Thanks, I look forward to playing it. I downloaded the file, to have a look at the events files and so on. It looks like a very good scenario, I like the range of units too.

I just tried your scenario a few turns. Unit stats are good but not perfect, playability is also very good.

That´s it for the 1st impression!

One major nit-pick of graphical nature: I suggest you make the unit shields appear on the right spot. And try to get some units from the showcases. There are very fine fairline-style units out there. I would also be glad to lend you a (graphical) hand!

Thanks for a reasonable first impression. Let me know what stat and graphic changes you suggest, other than shield alignment.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Just a few suggestions for events...

Would it be possible to have randomly created US Recruits units, in order to show new arrivals of draftees at least up until the Tet Offensive? This could show the US Government's support for Westmoreland's request for more troops in South East Asia. I'm not too sure if it's possible, but after the North Vietnamese research Tet Offensive, the random US Recruit units should stop. This then shows the flagging support for the war at home.

Would it be more realistic if the US player were penalised (financially) each time a US Recruits unit is killed, in order to show the lowering of public support in the US as a result of casualties?

Would it be possible to have the US invasion of Cambodia included and with it the further decline in domestic support? Either through a technology (like the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive tech) or through a "MAKEAGGRESSION" between the Cambodians and US in April 1970 (or February 1969 for the bombing).

I know I've not actually had the opportunity to play the scenario yet and I don't mean to nit-pick in any way, I just thought that the above suggestions could add some further realism to the scenario. I found a timeline at http://www.pbs.org/battlefieldvietn...ine/index1.html which has a lot of information on the War. Sorry if I sound critical, I'm not, I just thought I'd add a few suggestions for the events file.

Don't worry, I thrive on constructive criticism; suggestions are always welcome. Problem is, though I like many of your ideas, I'd have to split the events into two text files, and I'm not certain where or how to do that and make it work. But, as I said, I like many of your ideas.

BTW, I'm considering turning the 'NV Supply Truck' into an 'NVA Motorized Infantry,' as it much more resembles one, and I think I should leave trade up to the capitalist powers. On that note, does anyone have a good .WAV file for a motorized infantry unit?

Would it work as a Wordpad file, rather than a notepad one? Sometimes I try to open events files, but they're too big for notepad, so it opens them in wordpad... I'm no expert on this

Not sure I read you correctly!

If your question was : could we have a bigger event file if we created a wordpad one instead of a notepad, then the answer sadly is no! The problem comes from the size the civ engine is ready to accept and process!

Ah, ok. I didn't know whether it was a problem with notepad or with civ 2 itself. What if batch files were used to divide the scenario into two stages? Might be a bit too complicated though, and sometimes it's a pain in the neck to use

18-20kb is your limit for events - You must keep your eye on the size as you are adding events.

Although, ToT gives a massive huge 100kb for events!

Well, I would say:
Pre Tet - 1965 to November 1967
Tet - November 68 to February 68
Post Tet - February 68 to 1970
Beginning of the End - 1970 to 72
Endgame 1972 - 75

@GoPostal
I agree, that would be the best way to break down the war. Also, that way I could do my Tet Offensive set of triggers by date, instead of a tech (which I probably should have done in the first place), and free up a tech slot. BTW, have you downloaded the beta. Let me know what you think of it.

Sure you can use WordPad to open/edit events files. As long as you make sure you save them as plain text files.

There are no such things as "NotePad files" or "WordPad files". They're simply two different programs that can edit text files. But WordPad can also edit formatted text like RTF or Word files. Civ2 can't read that.

I think the first phase is too long. After a while you beginn to think of disbanding units for city improvements...

And you should place the unitshields right.

But after all it's great fun playing!

@SetuSinger:
Thanks for the review. I'll work on those shields soon.

I made a mistake and forgot to check the stated three cities each in Cambodia and Laos as objectives (only those playing the North Vietnamese likely noticed). This updated .SCN file fixes that problem.

Perhaps you should just make less use of the createunit event. Now at the end of part I I got 7 or so Riverboats and now charlie boats are in sight...

Also I can't select units in cities because they get blockaded by all these fine young us recruits...

Perhaps I did overdo the createunit event. I'll work to rectify that in version 1.1. I myself playtested as the North Vietnamese/Viet Cong, and didn't find unit crowding a problem until the Tet offensive began, but then it certainly was so. Thanks for the review!

While playing as the North Vietnamese, several B-52s attacked Haiphong, wiping out the units there. This was followed by an amphibious assault by the marines, who captured the city. As per events, the US commander was sacked, and quite abruptly, all US cities disappeared from the map. As a result, I was able to overrun not only South Vietnam, but Cambodia, Laos and most of Thailand.

It appears that the events.txt work both ways...

I am unable to prevent an AI-controlled US from capturing North Vietnamese home cities. Once the Yanks are gone, I admit it becomes pathetically easy to win as the NVN/VC player (I know, that's the player I first playtested with). I guess a Civ scenario just can't be perfect (though we keep trying). Thanks for taking the time to review my work!
