I have used vinigar on occasion. Remember mayo from Pulp Fiction, but never tried it.

That is a good point, I can't think of any major publishing house that can't be considered profitting from military means. Uless teaching people how to kill isn't as bad as making weapons either.

BTW, choosing one branded product over another does not a boycott make.

They're just selling ketchup.

The links of Dassault (holding company with a defence arm) and Lagardère (major shareholder in EADS) with the defence industry are more direct than that.

I'm a conscious consumer:

I support my political belief in capitalism by boycotting companies that don't give me the best product at the best value for money.

Works wonders.

Why boycott Heinz? AFAIK they don't make anything really objectionable, like weapons, and you will be harming lots of ordinary people who don't have any political axe to grind, but just turn up to work to try and make something that people will enjoy.

I don't boycott American goods on principle. Why should some honest Nebraskan farmer who's never done anything to anyone pay for Shrub's perfidy?

Yeah, becasue there was no military spending before Bush...

You know the Iraq war has had very little effect on weapons procurement, except maybe to stall some things. The extra costs are mostly operational.

I only boycott highly symbolic American products, i.e. those that turn their belonging to America as something to be proud of, as a commercial argument. All products from Coca Cola Company (and all products looking like Coca Cola itself*), all Pepsi products, MacDonalds and similar fast foods*, and blue jeans. I boycott Mars company for another reason, I don't want to directly give money to a weapon maker.

That's about it, there was a time I was much more hardcore, as I boycotted all American movies as well.

*regardless of nationality: people can't understand why I don't drink Mecca Cola or Zamzam Cola either.

Do you boycott any other country or is it an American thing?

I don't boycott any other country so far, although I considered boycotting Japanese cultural products ~15 years ago.

I oppose the agressive spread of any culture that threatens others. The American culture fitted the bill, even though the spread of American culture goes now at a much slower pace than before.
When I was young, and thus fed with youth TV programs, the Japanese looked like they had an agressive spreading of their culture; I now see it is much more limited than what I thought.

If tomorrow's China starts spreading its culture like hell, at the risk of destroying local cultures in its wake, I'll probably boycott Chinese cultureal products.

I'd hate to turn this into a "China: good or bad" thread but you don't consider China as being bad for many cultures that they dominate or is it just that they don't affect France sort of deal.

I consider China to be very bad for the cultures they are currently dominating. They are outright destroying the Tibetan and Uighur culture.

But this is done with a policy of colonialism and brutal repression, rather than through cultural products. Hence, there aren't cultural products to boycott to fight against it.

So? That makes him a bit of an idiot, but certainly not deserving of being hounded into bankruptcy by consumer boycotts.

Generally, politics should be kept separate from purchasing decisions, to the benefit of both. The point of the market is to provide the best quality merchandise at the lowest possible price, not to allow us to conduct political vendettas.

Imagine the hit that efficiency would take if everyone only bought goods from people with similar political views.

I boycott McD, because of their ripoff prices. I eat healthier, and cheaper fast food around here. Incidentally, the franchise holder is a defeatist wackjob person that I don't fully agree with politically.

Of course, as Hobbes pointed out, nearly 400 years ago, a society based on this principle will leave us wallowing in dirt.
