Research done on the "buying decision process" shows that there are many different factors that come into play... with advertising playing only a small role.

While advertising can help position one product over another, the final decision is made for many other additional reasons. Even with direct response advertising, the commercial only acts as a trigger for a perceived need, and it can't convince somebody to buy something they truely don't think they need.

That's not really what I'm saying. Stupid annoying advertisement can make you prefer one product over another simply because you are more familiar with it. Sure informative advertising works, but so does the other.

It depends on what you consider "annoying"... Research done on annoying commericals (those that piss you off) indicates that they are counter productive to the sales cycle... and act in the opposite fashion that you suggest. Many people will not buy products from companies where they hate the advertising.

Now, if you are refering to ads with "catchy jingles" that may seem mildly annoying... yeah, it might help you remember that the product exists, but it won't make you "prefer" one product over another.

Suffering from ads?

There is actually one good reason to buy Wketchup. If I lived in the US I might consider it if it wasn't for the incredibly tacky label.

if it's cheaper than store-brand ketchup, maybe i'd buy it.

however, i think it's kinda stupid to be on a "buy domestic!" kick.

Tired of ads?

actually, i also think it's kinda stupid to buy products based on political allegiance. especially ones that proudly display it on their sleeve.

and wtf is up with that reagan thing? sure, i can buy reagan could have been a good guy, but wtf does he have to do with my ketchup?

*shakes head quickly

Everyone finds advertisement annoying. That's why people pay to avoid advertising. That's why city councils try to eliminate ugly annoying bilboards. Of course it's all annoying. A very small portion of it is informative at all, but yes it all works.

That's interesting for my old eyeglasses, which are saturated in sweat, and which cannot be completely cleaned with cloth.

That's about it. I haven't been informed by advertisement other than that.

Not everybody... plus, research shows that if you are in the market for a product, you start paying attention to the advertising, and it isn't annoying. For example, when you make the decision that you need a car, you actually start paying attention to ads for cars...

That's why people pay to avoid advertising.

Yes... some do. But others don't... and then you have things like the Super Bowl, where some people find the ads more interesting than the game.

That's why city councils try to eliminate ugly annoying bilboards.

If that was truely the case, there would no longer be any billboards left. Yes, some limit them, and set rules regarding the ammount and placement... but many embrace them since some cities make revenue from them

quote:

Of course it's all annoying. A very small portion of it is informative at all

If you take a look at an average newspaper, probably 90% of the ads are informative...

And if you consider the earliest and most common form of advertising, signs in front of stores, they are indeed informative because they tell people the name of the establishment, and sometimes imply what can be purchased.

I know some commies who boycott Israeli products. In practice I guess it means they try to avoid putting Jaffa oranges in their shopping carts.

Why do you guys hate on diamonds so much? It's all a women wide conspiracy. It's because of them that diamonds cost so much, but if we destroyed all the diamonds they would just ask for something else, and that would probably be more expensive.

Actually, artificial Diamonds can already be produced. those are just as good as the "natural" ones. So, my guess is that the diamond's industry's days are numbered, really.
