X-post.

English is a proper noun and should have a capital letter, Giancarlo. Sentences shouldn't being with a conjunction, either.

Can everybody start correcting the spelling and grammar of everyone else's posts, now? It'll be just like the SDMB!

well "I" is supposed to be capitalized, and so is every first letter of each sentence you make.

good god, don't you think i know that? go tell self biased that italics should only be used when someone wants emphasis.

And what the hell was this? A glaring example of poor english, run on sentences and ignorance.

actually, there aren't any run-on sentences in there. it's just a lot of grammatical phrases strung together.

where is the ignorance showcased there?

It's generally accepted as poor style and it's standard practice to put a comma before "but". Go tell that to people like Emily Dickinson, though.

You're Right, and it's funny that [a conservative] [is wrong] and resorts to equating someone who is a moderate but [correct] with someone more [fascist] than most people are today.

the things in brackets were replaced by grammatical phrase constructions. i forget what they're technically called, but it hardly matters anyway, particularly since there aren't any run-on sentences in there.
poor english it is, though, and yet poor english has sometimes lead to lots of joviality and humor, and don't take that with a grain of salt.

Rule - the comma comes after every subject except the last one. You should have said: A glaring example of poor english, run on sentences, and ignorance.

Also, the above is a sentence fragment, as it has no verb.

I was always taught that comma and and should not go together. Learning by rote is bad though.

A state, by definition, can simply forgive itself of all its debts.

That's not a very good idea, though.

Giancarlo, you are letting a lot of people have way too much fun at your expense here.

Now, getting back to the context of all this, we saw an article that made projections that the US national debt will mushroom significantly under current spending and taxing laws and (apparently) assuming accurate demographic projections. You read the article and I quote your reply to it above. From the first part of your post it is amazingly clear that you find such projections speculative and unreliable. You then even more clearly state "Projections are not always right and the chances of them being wrong for the longer term is a lot greater.". nothing could be more clear.

but

"I don't take these with a grain of salt."

Means to any reader that you take these projections very seriously.

"I take these with a grain of salt."

Means to any reader that you do not take these projections very seriously. I still get idioms wrong and English is my first language so I really don't see why you're letting this correction get you upset. I'm always grateful when people correct my misunderstanding of an idiom even though I am a native speaker. If you don't want to admit that you made this perfectly understandable error in the use of a silly idiom then at least stop shouting that you didn't make an error. It's painful watching you unwittingly embarrass yourself in this way.

Put an end to popups!

the really scary thing about this deficit is that all the old deficit hawks in both parties seem to have flown the coop. Both presidential candidates are huge spenders and the fiscal responsibility streak the republican party had back in it's old contract with america days seems to have totally evaporated. It was amazing that politicians ever pulled it together to start paying down the astronomical debt and it's crushing to see how quickly all that remarkable progress has been abandoned by both parties.

Actually I agree that projections shouldn't be taken very seriously. Rather we need to examine the current data that the projections are based on.

When you say that I'm so wrong, what exactly is it that you are referring to?

Ummm several were lost since 2000? Maybe but that is a fact with the business cycle. Companies lay people off to adjust to changing business environments. Bush did not cause this. The recession originally started in 1999 from what I have heard (when corporate profit started to plummet). 144,000 is for one month too. You love selectively choosing nonsense to fit your nonsense arguments.

Actually there was no recession because of tax cuts. There had to be two consecutive quarters of negativity, but there was only one. The tax cuts increased growth.

I have a prediction:

In 10 years Sean Hannity will write a book blaming the Democrats for the deficit. I don't know how he will blame them (since they don't control any level of government), but he will, and millions of Americans will believe him anyway.
