I understand it would not be gentlemanlike to capture or bribe a city with a wonder, right?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

well this possibility didnt cross my mind

the idea is that you dont include wonders in your strategy. perhaps we make it a rule that if you capture a city with a wonder you must destroy it

thoughts?

Better would be "you must raze an AI city with a wonder" - otherwise someone might take their time with something like Mikes Chapel.

Maybe that will be the handicap -- best players will raze wonder cities, average Joes can get by with capture, but never build them.

Full PM-box? Change here!

In my opinion, to set a requirement that any city with a wonder must be razed is too difficult a constraint. The way I play, I never have enough (offensive) military units to raze anything bigger than a size 3 city, and for a spaceship victory, that works for me well enough.

So I suggest the rule must be that cities with wonders can be captured or bribed, then destroy the wonder, but what about Leo's Workshop? If captured, will it upgrade units immediately before you get a chance to destroy it, or does it not upgrade units until the end of your turn, or even until the next tech discovery? I have never captured it before, as I always build it myself!

I think I will have a go at this one next week. The 'no wonders' constraint will make it a totally different game for me, as I always build loads of wonders. My normal style is very un-aggressive, building a few phalanxes for defence, and maybe 3 warriors per city which upgrade to musketeers and later to riflemen (I always build Leo's). Later, when I build more cities, I will just spread these riflemen out, until many cities are defended by only one rifleman, or two for frontier cities. I build hardly any offensive units, just a horse or two for exploring and killing barb archers, but will acquire a few from huts or bribing of cities. I don’t capture many cities except with ships and later bombers (plus one land unit to walk in), but mostly I capture by bribing. I hardly ever disband a unit, as I always have Leo's, and I always build at least one happiness wonder, so it will make an interesting challenge!

I learned much from last month's tournament (which I didn’t play as I came back from holiday just before it ended), most particularly that I should build my early cities closer together. I will do that next time...

You can't destroy a wonder except by destroying the city that contains it. Here's how I plan to play: wonder-containing AI cities may not be bribed or captured, but must be destroyed (by reducing them to size 1 before moving in). If an AI wonder city doesn't contain enough defenders to be destroyed, I will park my units outside the undefended city and wait for the city to build more defenders, or for another AI to capture it.

Thanks, Markos, for editing the spoiler information out of Elephant's post .

Thanks for educating me on that - I had assumed it could be 'sold' like other city improvements.

Can the constraint be relaxed to permit the capture of cities containing expired wonders, as these have no effect except on score, and avoid the need for pointless (and, for me, difficult!) razing of cities?

simply download the game
http://apolyton.net/upload/view.php...30_APO04SEP.zip
and play it (unzip the file in your civ2 folder and you'll get a .sav file. use the "load game" option from civ2 to load the saved game)
and play it.

then post the results on this page

Oh, indeed yes, one can starve any city to size 1 and build a Sett to destroy it.

However, and strictly following the rules, the human player would have the benifit of that WoW for that period of time. Depending on the Wonder, this could have a large impact. Hanging Gardens might enable a sudden growth spurt for the other cities; Leo might upgrade the fleet.

No Wonders must mean razing only. Otherwise, how do the results compare??

OK, I can't download a playable version. I seem to be computer-challenged yet again.

I get an icon, but it is not recognized by my Civ II program as a save. This is the case whether I download the zipped or unzipped save. I have tried two thinga: clicking on the link (downloads a file labelled view.php) and downloading the link to disk (I can name it what I want, but the results are the same). I do not have a command to save link to a location in my browser.

Last month's save was fine.

Arggggh!

Monk-

Thanks for the help, but that is not the problem.

The icon says Civ II Gold Alternative Scenario. I don't know what in this context 'alternative' means. It neither loads as a game or opens as a scenario, in either Civ II gold or vanilla 2.42. This month, I can unzip the zipped version and get to the same non-useful place. Last month I couldn't access the zipped save, but the unzipped version still downloads very nicely, so it isn't that my computer works differently this month.

It is a puzzlement.

Situation solved!

Thanks to Monk's indefatigability, I tried something new.
I seem to have had a problem with automatic configuration by my browser. I removed the CivII helper file and downloaded the save directly to disk. Then it worked with both 2.42 and MGE.

Some Helper file...
