Monarch level, AU mod
After a short brake, I returned to the Persians - bringing them their last war. Before I got Education, a couple core cities had time to finish some more War Elephants (only after finishing every building available). The Persians died fast, now that they had no more mountains to hide behind. While they were at it, the Chinese felt my wrath also. Their last two cities on the continent fell, leaving them on an island... not. The victorious army was moved from former Persia and landed on the Chinese island to finish them off. In 1080 AD both Persia and China were history. On the same turn Printing Press was Researched and contact made with all AIs (we knew the Iroquis and Spain from a suicide Galley run long ago).
Found some unclaimed islands to the north, so Settlers will be sent shortly. I have to make it fast, because an Iroquis galley just came by my shores. Seems they found a way, darn them.
In this game the reason for conquest is a special one. Normally I don't need or want that much land. But here I'm in constant need of new cities to put new culture in them, especially with so much cash on hand. I might combine two reasons for conquest, as my home continent holds only 3 luxuries.
Research could be in 4-turn pace for some time now, but I'm keeping it at 5-7 to have a constant cash surpulus for rushes. After Gunpowder it was Education, Music Theory and Astronomy, followed by Printing Press.
I addition to Sun Tzu's I also lost Leonardo's Workshop to the Iroquis. I got Bach's Cathedral instead, and the Iroquis had no more wonders to build, so Copernicus' will probably be mine. With Universities finished, some core cities have nothing to build, so I should probably start a prebuild for Smith's shortly.
The Iroquis are definately going to be tough on me. They are the closest in score, have a much bigger army and nearly as much land as I do. They definately killed the Ottomans (I checked the city names and Istanbul was tere). They took big chunks of the Spanish, the Germans and probably Arabs. Luckily all those wars made them switch to Feudalism, so they don't have the expensive cultural buildings. I still have more than twice their culture with many rushes to do. What I fear is a huge invasion. [edit after watching the game replay: it was the Germans who hit Arabia early on, not the Iroquis]
Right now I have some leftovers from my campaigns and am not disbanding them. For a while, some coastal cities lacked defenders. SoZ and Knights Templar help a little for now. Will probably add some Elephants and Muskets from core cities, before they start on banks. The big problem: I need all the cash for the rushes, so upgrades will be slow. There are still many spearmen sitting around.
India in 1100 AD. I have 5 cities still to put on the continent. Then it's off to the islands.

Here's the Indian Culture. Well, parts of it. Increase this turn will be 448 points for the whole Indian empire.
[edit]
Note the cultural value of the Temple and Library compared to other buildings.

Picking up my notes where I left off in DARIII:
590 AD - Having just loaded the game for a new night of playing, I notice China is building the GW. This would trigger their GA, which is unacceptable. We switch our best city to the GW, losing 60 shields from a Leo's prebuild, damn.
The Chinese and Persians are fighting a long, pointless war. The Persians are weak, the Chinese are strong, but both must use galleys to send troops at each other. Thus, nothing much happens.
600 AD - We finish the GW.
750 AD - We finish the Sistine.
790 AD - Navigation! Finally, we can get across the ocean.
800 AD - Contact with the Iroquois. I had seen their borders far earlier, but my FIVE suicide galleys all died.
860 AD - Contact with the Ottomans. Iroquois and Arabians have allied to fight them. They're toast.
880 AD - Contact with the Arabs. They're CRAP!! They're still in the ancient age. Currency for their World Map & 1 gold.
890 AD - Iroquois finish Sun Tzu. Oh well. Contact with Spain. Dyes + Incense to Spain for World Map, 60 gold, 6 gpt.
900 AD - Monotheism to Iroquois for 504 gold, wine, spices, and their WM.
930 AD - Leonardo's complete. Contact with Germany.
On to DAR V.

Since I actually had contact with all civilizations before I learned how my own continent's northern area was shaped, I don't really have any events to post here. However, there are some gaps in what I described in my last DAR that need to be filled in.
1) The demise of the Arabs turned out to have been a result of a classic German early rush, although not so early that the Arabs hadn't had time to build a couple additional cities. Spain had been conquered later on by the Iroquois. That left the Iroquois as the biggest civ on the continent, with the Germans and Ottomans both respectable.
2) Germany and the Ottomans were behind the Iroquois technologically. As of AD 920, they were all lacking Chivalry, Monotheism, and Invention. The Iroquois were more advanced, with everything through Education and Gunpowder. India had a tech lead with Astronomy, Navigation, and Banking.
3) All three civs on the other continent were using Feudalism as their form of government. That made for a relatively slow tech pace and not much in the way of prospects for selling techs for gold. This was definitely not shaping up to be a game with an early space race victory!
4) The Iroquois were the only civ that I felt like was in a position to undercut my plans for a cultural victory. They had more than half my culture, but not by a huge amount.
5) Speaking of Feudalism, I was pretty happy with its effects on corruption. With a courthouse, no city anywhere on the home continent was totally corrupt. And with how many cities I built and conquered, many of which remained small, I didn't have to worry at all about unit support. I missed Republic's trade bonus from a research perspective, and I missed Monarchy's lack of war weariness, and I definitely missed getting out of Despotism as early as I usually do. But Feudalism seemed to work out reasonably well. For a civ that wants to conquer its home continent and doesn't mind doing it a little bit at a time, the AU Moid version of Feudalism is not necessarily a bad option.

Monarch, AU Mod, 750 AD...
Culture: I'm kicking ass in the wonder races. Right now (building Leo's, Sistene is complete), the only wonders I don't have are the Hanging Gardens, The Oracle, Temple of Artemis, and Mausoleum of Mausollo, which are all owned by the Iroquois. They captured the ToA from the Spanish, and I captured the Great Lighthouse from the Chinese. Due to the Great Library, I've been able to rush Temples/Libraries/Marketplaces, and some courthouses in newly taken Chinese cities, and of course all my cities are fully built up. Even with the Great Library, I kept research up for a good 1/3rd of this last DAR (since 70 AD or so). I only did this because I had run out of wonders to build Now that I've met everyone on the other continent, and will have some new Chinese cities to rush build in, research is back down to 0%.
Tech: The Iroquois and Germans are closest in tech, but they're still 6 techs behind each. I don't know if I should get the most out of the GL by leaving research on 0%, or forge ahead and try to build wonders before everyone else even knows the techs... I think this will depend on A. how long it takes me to conquer and build in former Chinese lands, and B. if I can take out the Persians as well before everyone else gets to education. I think I should be able to do this.
War Machine: I just love them War Elephants... They roll through spearmen like nobody's business. I'm a little worried about taking on immortals with them, but I think I can cut both of Persia's iron supplies early on in the war. Since I'm running out of building to build in my core, I should have quite the surplus of Elephants by the time I move on to Persia.
I'm not including a map screen shot, simply because not much has changed. If you really need to see one, imagine that the Chinese are left with only their tundra cities, the persians are untouched, and the other continent, except for embassies, is entirely unknown.

quote: How has your civilization evolved as you developed the technologies needed to meet the rest of the world (or they developed the technologies needed to meet you)? |
I attacked Persia and really struggled to defeat them. Their Immortals started their Golden Age and I had only a few War Elephants + 2 armies ( 1 Horsemen, 1 War elephant, remember I got 3 leaders) available. My own Golden Age had already begun before the war; I think the Statue of Zeus started it. It was very useful to get some Middle Age Techs.. I did not build many units, because I was building improvements mostly. Finally, around 800 AD, I captured the Persian capital, and it went downhill for them from there. Also, around 800 AD, I had discovered Navigation, and met the other civs.
quote: How are you doing culturally compared with the rest of the world, and how have your choices affected your scientific progress? Who are the Killer AIs, if any, and who were their victims? What governments are the AIs using? (.....) And what are your plans as you move forward through the future? |
No Killer Ai's in my game. they have been peaceful. Only just after I met the other civs the Iroqoius captured Spain, who was only left with a few colonies. The weak Arabs and Germans are left untouched...So I have a large cultural lead over everyone else, three times more than the best AI (Iro's) I now have conquered my continent and going to build myself to victory. I hope to win before 1600 AD, that would be nice
I see I am very lucky with the AI's, as in some games the Iro's are very strong. The AI's are mostly in Feudalism, the Iro's switched when they got Democracy, although that was much later. I have a huge tech lead, ~7 techs on the Iro's, who get a tech every twenty turns for their luxuries, and the Germans too for their furs. That is why I can maintain a 4 turn tech pace during most of the game.

AU 504, DAR4:
In the immediate period after DAR3 I did not take any notes. I played along as normal and captured Persopolis. The collapse of Persia begins to accelerate...
500AD, China declares war and takes Teintsin. Like I care.
510AD, Capture and raze Parsagadae with 3 ACs and a lone Horseman. The AI does a smart manoever and settles a new town, placing my now injured fastmovers in its' culture
But it probably did it to reclaim the ivory...
520AD, finish Feud, and upgrade all my units in the now threatened chokepoints to pikes and MI...China is going down as soon as I am finished with Persia. I will cut iron and stockpile the chokes, but China does not scare me.
560AD, Persia no longer lives on the mainland. I have the boats to wipe them out, but make peace for everything they have: three cities and 42 gold. then I disband one city since there is a chinese sword standing right outside it...My army starts marching down to the chokepoints. Whether they will arrive in time is yet to be seen...
590AD, 1400g in the bank, I start research on Engineering, @ -3gpt, in 7 turns. I want get leos asap, so I start a nice prebuild (somewhere)
China does scare me now. The thing about choke points is that you know exactly where your opponent is going to attack you...the problem is that you never know the amount of force they are going to bring to bare:

But sometimes you never know what is going to happen...now what should I do with that MGL??
I only lost one vet pike. China lost 14 swords and 2 archers.
That is 1 shield:16 shields loss ratio. Not an effective attack, really...

I don't need an army. I have abou 25 MI, 10 pikes and 20 cats moving down to hit China. A nice pike army would stop him hitting me, but since it seems that he has thrown all his offensive units at me, there is little reason in doing that.
I think I will go for the overkill option that you just suggested, and make a 3xMI army. That will really hurt the pikes...
(BTW, the FP is in Bengal, the palace has already been moved. As soon as I have finished cutting all that jungle i will have a nice productive piece of land to the north east of the capital. When China is gone I will downsize the army and go to REP.)
edit in response to the below post: oh, I forgot about that...I'll build pike army to protect the future WE I'll have.

What a wonder of good luck! I second Modo - build an offensive army. For Heroic Epic, of course, and also for raw power of army. Even it can only load one unit now, +4 hp bonus should not be overlooked. Imagine a 10hp war elephant army...

370ad: Regrouping didn't cost much of time. 60 years after the first Indo-Persia war, we are ready to kick Chinese once again. Just the same old trick, I asked them out and they declare war for me.
390ad: Beijing, together with its magnificant Pyramids, became part of Indian Kingdom! Many of my troops, including the ancient cavalry army, died outside the city, though.
After quelling the resistance, Beijing's building queue was set to temple (rushed), courthouse, forbidden palace.
But that was the farthest place I captured in this war. Chinese offered some respectable counter attack that tied up many of my forces, and guarding Beijing from flipping wasn't an easy job either. Moreover, as my cities were busying building infrastructures, I didn't have reinforcement by hand. When several Chinese swordsmen approached to relatively weak defended town of Dacca, we told them the war was enough, it's time for peace.
420ad: The Great Wall was built in Bombay.
550ad: Idea of monotheism spreaded the whole India. We even let it influence Persian, for a price of engineering knowledge. Of course we'd like to know about feudalism instead, but they wouldn't give it up. So we researched it ourselves.
600ad: A flood of Persian immortals ran into my territory, seemed to ingore my most outside city of Bactra. What were they for? My weak defended heartland cities? Or China? I order my troop to beware, and see what would happen.
640ad: Feudalism was well studied by Indian sages. We were now technically equal to Persian. What was next? My military advisor cried for some workshop to upgrade our troops. So invention. Two prebuild were started shortly after that.
680ad: It seemed like Persian's aim was China. Good, so long as they wouldn't backfire me.
760ad: Invention skill of our technicians was proper trained. Leo's Workshop progressed well.
Persian army reached China at last. War broke out.
820ad: Forbidden palace was established in Beijing.
950ad: We learned about Theology that year, 100 years after we adored Chivalry. Two wonder projects were already finished, too. One is Knight Templar in 850ad. the other is Leo's Workshop in 920ad. Now it's the right time of upgrading my forces and teach Persian to respect other's border.
980ad: China got an upper hand in Persia-China war, likely because of shorter supply line. Our war elephants entered service just right time. I blocked the chockpoint of south mountain barrier, told Persian they would be consider hostile if they wouldn't withdraw their force. Obviously they refused. Of course, our war elephants gladly trampled those fragile immortals. Historians mark this day as the beginning of our golden age!
The war didn't go well enough, however. Building universities diverted some of our efforts from supplying the front line. More important, much land of Persia is hiding behind a chain of mountains and hills, which seriously hampered our war elephents' movement. The assualt on Persepolis was not started until about 1200ad, and the first assualt was, unfortunelty, failed, by the last pikeman with the last hp left guarding the city. The second assualt in 1255ad succeeded, granting Indian the control fo Great Library. Of course, knowledges inside the library were all out-dated by the time.
The war didn't slow my tech rating any more, thought. I got education in 1070, astronomy in 1150, music theory in 1200, banking in late half of 13th century, all were first of the world. Therefore, there were no competitors to Copernicus's and Bach's.
1310ad: An ambassador of Iroquis arrived in Delhi. I checked my map, there's no galley of them near our shore, so he must come from China. They seemed to be obsessed by our music, willing to gave us knowledge of printing press and republic, together with communication with Spain, Ottoman, and Arabia. Since Bach's Cathedral is only 5 turns to complete, I gladly agreed the trade.

By the time, India was tech leader, the only nation that knew astronomy and banking. Iroquis and China were second tier. Arabia and Persia were third tier. They're both lack of music theory and printing press. Ottoman was sixth. Spain was the last - they hadn't even a middle age tech.

I made some mistakes in this stage, once agian.
First, I should attack China first, for my Fobbiden Palace is located at Beijing. Also, Persia with chivalry is the same Persia without it, since they don't have horses. China, on the other hand, will be much more dangerous with their rider. One more point, China have no barrier to slow down my war elephants. Sigh, I was too single-minded when playing...
Second, as you see in above picture, I left luxury slider at 20%, which is too high, for I've already set up Sistine Chapel. It didn't hurt too much, but nevertheless it is a mistake.
