Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Since the time period is set, there are no outrageously obvious mistakes. The historical grognards are naturally arguing about changes that need to be made to make it perfect, but those broadly consist of allowing Romans to recruit Hastati, Principes and Triarii from the word go (but with less godlike stats for the upgraded versions) and making all the cavalry and specialist units a little weaker at head-on charges. The basic game is a bit too slanted against the standard infantry (except legionaries.) Close formation infantry were the core of almost all armies of the day for a good reason.

The biggest complaints on that topic have been the how overstrength cav is compared to inf (although I would say that the slant is pretty steep against inf).

Individual units that are noticably overstrong are Egyptian chariots, desert axemen, and Roman aux archers (range is too great). Elephants have been toned down in the first patch.

I can't say I've noticed desert axemen being a problem, but then by the time I reach Egypt I'm fielding pretty advanced armies which seem to mow through just about any trooops in light armour.

While playing as a Roman faction, I like to build my armies around Archers and Heavy Cavalry. I usually have advanced armies way before the AI factions. This is key because the Roman Heavy Cavalry is the most powerful in the game. Most of my battles are sieges, so Archers are important. My Archers usually pound the enemy pretty good. Once they are out of arrows, or if the enemy has retreated to the town square; I send in Heavy Cavalry to mop up. I like to use my Urban Cohorts only for Spearmen. The Heavy Cavalry are great for everything else.

I usually build armies consisting of 3-5 Archer Auxilia, 3 Heavy Cavalry, and 3 Urban Cohorts. I use Heavy Onagers sometimes, but only when I'm sieging a town with Stone Walls.

I've played some custom battles as well. Usually I build half my army with just Archer Auxilia with Heavy Cavalry and Urban Cohorts making up the rest.

My strategy is great against the AI. But I'm not sure how a human player would do against this strategy. An easy way to beat it would be to rush my Archers with Cavalry. But that's why I use my Cavalry as guards for the Archers in the early stages of a battle.

The absolute funniest thing is watching a Heavy Onager projectile crash into a formation of infantry... I've had one of those take out half a division with one shot.

Hiring Mercenary units is a really good strategy. If you have the cash, you can increase an army size very quickly in a very short time. For example, if a city is rioting, just move a general outside the city, buy as many merc units as possible, then move them back into the city in the same turn. You can get 5 or 6 units in a single turn. Likewise, if you are besieging a city or need extra troops, you can really increase your army fast.

Not quite as funny as using the flame special ability and have the onager shot splash 10 feet in front of itself right on top of a friendly unit.

Shame ya could have some sort of friendly fire assistance..

but..I reckon that would defeat perhaps a generals motivation to keep fighting..or else!

What ticks people off about the axemen, is their insane 11 armor, while they are practically naked

I just encountered a very weird bug. I am playing as the Greeks and I captured Rome. I got the pop up about games being held in Rome but the message said "The games held text should never appear on screen and should not be translated".
