Unless the cliff were banked, not sheer, in which case missing by 2 or 3 squares could have you at the bottom, whereas missing by 1 means you hit the side, as mentioned in the story.

Not that I'm making a comment on what's a better rule, but just commenting on the logic.

And I said the next or the ONE after. I am very busy at work, so if someone would take the next one, I'll take the one after.

Good Job Jonny, the race length was probably just about right.

Kassi prepares to cruise across the finish line, although rah and Sparrow are both not far behind, and helped keep the race close for its entirety. Spaced and Ljube are still on the far side of the jump.

Now accepting turn 34 orders, if you want... but it seems like a done deal now.

I will send my orders as a question......

The rules read that anything deliberately off track will result in a speed of 0. Yet if you mistakenly go off track your speed is reduced depending on how much you go off track.

My current speed and no wild cards mean I would be unable to make the turn (and I realized that I shouldn't accelerate a couple of turns ago, but the game was essentailly over already and I continued to accelerate so that I could pose the question below for discussion before the next game), but why couldn't I send in orders of........

AMR(M8) (and for the sake of this turn, these are my orders)

This would have me cut the corner and go off track one space, and slow me down enough that I think I would stop before I went off the track just ahead of where Rah is now.

According to the rules this is not allowed unless the GM somehow interpreted this as an "accident". I don't understand why this is only allowed as accidental and not allowed as a deliberate part of strategy.

I don't see it as any different then hitting a sandbag that you know is there, rather then trying to drive around it (the result ends out being that the sandbag slows you down, as would going off track deliberately).

As the penalties for being more off track end out increasing the further you go off track, this strategy would not work for much more then what I am proposing in my orders for this turn, so I don't see the harm......

Opinions?

Oh, and congrats Kassiopeia on a great fill in race (and for that matter to Duke o' York ) and to Jonny on a well GM'd race . I liked both the length and the track

Edit: and I also like the fact that we all ended with 0 Wildcards Sign of a good game I think that we all needed to use up all of them

Thanks. I couldn't have done it without Duke's part of the race, all those wild cards he saved up for me really helped.

The sign-up thread for the new race can be found here.

As for Sparrow's question...
The issue of cutting a corner has never come up before, and I think that that should be legal, IMO, as long as you aren't one or two spaces off of the track.

As to the wording in the rules concerning intentionally going off the track resulting in a reduction to speed zero, this was initially put in the rules to prevent pepople going too fast for a turn from simply driving straight through it in order to save a WC that he would have had to use in order to make the turn. But realistically, as a GM, I have no idea what is intentionally running off of the track as opposed to a typo in one's orders, so it has to be really blatant to make me reduce speed to zero.

Being able to cut a corner, albeit with an appropriate speed penalty, should be explored as an option by the next GM. But as it is now, there is no distinction between the wall that probably exisits on the outside of a track and the grassy area that probably exists on the inside of a track. Perhaps a new marking on the map representing a grassy/dirt area should be included on the map (usually on the inside of turns, but perhaps elsewhere, too) in the next game, that would be like sandbags but not hidden, i.e., you receive a speed penalty for each one you traverse. It could add some more strategy and decision making to the game, which is always a good thing.

Just need Ljube to post and Jonny to formalize the victory and this thread can be closed I think.

Only Jonny commented on my question though, does that mean no one else has a problem with what I propose as a rule change or that you didn't read the preceeding posts?

I object to corner cutting and will not allow it in any game I GM.

I see it as no different then bridge jumping to skip part of the track.
