--"i'm sure you can get diseases or problems from broccoli and water."
Like giardia...
Seriously, though, this is rather overblown. Eating anything carries some sort of risk with it. Just like any time you eat out, make sure you go somewhere reputable.
Of course, if you don't live on the coast, you're pretty much out of luck for getting good sushi anyway.
Personally, I don't like california rolls at all, but that's because I can't stand avacado in anything.
--"Puffer fish? Yeah I don't eat it though. I heard it is fatal if prepared wrong."
That's actually the point. The whole trick to preparing fugu is take out enough of the toxins to keep it non-fatal, but leave enough in so you get the tingle from it. Japanese fugu chefs are rather strictly regulated.

I do find the concept of people who don't even blink at the risk of eating raw fish but will recoil at the thought of eating food containing any gmo a bit ludicrous. Unfortunately I've had occasion to meet such people. I guess imaginary risks are far more frightening than real ones.

It's the best tasting (if you like it) but what other category is it best in? And as far as relative tastiness of foods I don't see how any food could be described as arguably the best in the world. there is no accounting for taste afterall.

I dunno, I'm a very adventerous in my culinary habits so I find eating exotic foods to be fun. It's always great to freak out the Mrs by ordering eels or seaweed or something like that.
My ultimate dream is trying "Tora-Fugu", supposedly the most poisonous but also the most delicious of the puffer fish.

But the difference between foods like sushi and Tora-Fugu is that for Tora-Fugu the risk is controllable. When prepared correctly the risk is zero. When eating raw sushi that was never frozen, irradiated or otherwise treated to kill the worms there is nothing you can do to control the risk.
