I don't understand the Ascendancy thing. Yes, the AI was crap, but everything else about the game was rather elegant and beautifully done. The AI patch made the game a reasonably enjoyable experience, IMO.
As for SW Rebellion...if you download RebEd, which allows you to edit all the buildings, units, etc. in the game, and shorten the production times and increase the speeds of all the ships, it becomes a much more playable game. The AI will put up a really challenging fight against you, at least on the highest level of difficulty.

I didn't like 1603AD (or was it 1602?) at all. The graphics were good, but the game itself was tedious.

nobody's mentioned this one:
Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires
First, it was so buggy, I had to save every few minutes to keep playing.
It had a number of decent concepts about it, such as the spread of technology from your capitol was a slow thing (the outlying colonies didn't have such good tech), which you could speed up with trade caravans, and roads and such. Cities had a slider to allocate between production and science, and producing a few things at once was possible. Building armies took some population, building settlers took a lot, and you could manage your pop growth and city defense together.
But good hell down under! the Microscopic management. I got deluged with messages all over the place with things that needed my attention. I was buried in details. it had a thing where you could turn your empire over to the AI and watch if you wanted, so I tried that, and after a hundred turns or so, I realized I didn't even care. Never went back.
