I think that it does appear that way. I've bought many games recently that I just love and place up there with games that I've played on my first computer the C64. How many games do you own that you ALWAYS go back to? That's what we're all looking for, isn't it? A game that will always be entertaining no matter how many times we play it. In my experience, there's 6 games that did that for me.
Bladur's Gate series (2000-2002)
Ultima series (1981-2000)
Arcanum (2000)
Dr. Creep (1984?)
Civilization series (1992)
Jumpman (1985?)
A couple years ago, Dr. Creep popped into my head and I searched for a C64 site (not even knowing that emulators existed). I found CCS64 and promptly downloaded it and Dr. Creep. I will play these games until the day I die (if I'm able) and enjoy them every time.
So, in my 20 years of gaming, I've found 6 games that I will come back to again and again.
I think we're spoiled by the quantity of games that are available now, and have become very demanding. Granted, there are plenty of bug-laden releases and utterly crappy games, but we're not going to find that magic with every game we buy.
