http://www.quartertothree.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=2 - great forum. Has numerous game developers posting along with press people, and game "journalists". Mainly PC focused but there is a lot about consoles too.

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

* Adagio jumps into the thread ignoring all posts for now!

I'm not unhappy with the games I buy, I'm unhappy about the lack good games to buy
There's only been few good games during the past couple of years and I've bought those few. But if I hadn't found a way to "try" the games before buying I would have bought more games, but then my good vs bad games I've bought would have changed drastically to the worse

Here's an examples:
Worms 3D - The demo was awsome, I played it constantly and was pretty sure that the game would be much better... but I was mistaking. The demo only showed the good parts, and the information/reviews about the game kinda forgot to mention what makes the game more annoying than fun. If it wasn't because of my nice fast internet connection (to test the full game), I would have bought it only to make myself look like an idiot after finding out it wasn't worth it...

But aside from that it finally looks like there'll be some good games to be released during the next year
But of course I'll test them before buying...

Of course then there's people who say: "Yeah right! You wont buy it once it's downloaded anyway", but to them I have to say: Not correct, I have several (read: many) times downloaded a game just to buy it shortly after

edit......

Good point Adagio - that is exactly my worry too, and i think i've not even mentioned it yet
Although i do buy loads of games, even ones that turn out to not be what the reviews have said they are. I guess i'm lucky in that i can afford to make mistakes.
As you mention - i think a real game-fan would, like you, buy the game even after 'trying' it first. I think we gamers want to encourage people to continue to make games for our entertainment. But like you say 'good ones' seem few and far between these last few years, or it atleast appears that way?

@pg cheers for the link - sounds like a great place to discuss game related things

I think that it does appear that way. I've bought many games recently that I just love and place up there with games that I've played on my first computer the C64. How many games do you own that you ALWAYS go back to? That's what we're all looking for, isn't it? A game that will always be entertaining no matter how many times we play it. In my experience, there's 6 games that did that for me.

Bladur's Gate series (2000-2002)
Ultima series (1981-2000)
Arcanum (2000)
Dr. Creep (1984?)
Civilization series (1992)
Jumpman (1985?)

A couple years ago, Dr. Creep popped into my head and I searched for a C64 site (not even knowing that emulators existed). I found CCS64 and promptly downloaded it and Dr. Creep. I will play these games until the day I die (if I'm able) and enjoy them every time.

So, in my 20 years of gaming, I've found 6 games that I will come back to again and again.

I think we're spoiled by the quantity of games that are available now, and have become very demanding. Granted, there are plenty of bug-laden releases and utterly crappy games, but we're not going to find that magic with every game we buy.
