Very impressive, though still blatently CGI but I can't put my finger on how.

Computer generated, but some piucs are very good, and if you see them alone you probably hadn't a chance to tell if she's real or not. Some others however have the typical "artificial" look and are easy to identify as CGI.

What is it about the pictures that make her look fake though?

I showed my friend this pic and asked him "real or fake?"
http://www.this-wonderful-life.com/photoshoot07.htm

He paused for a minute, looked, and said she was fake. I asked him why and he said her face looks plastic. Which it does, but why? What makes it look plastic?

It being artifically made?

The glossy textures and iridescent lighting don't help any, either.

I saw a video some time ago. The video was all CGI, but damn it looked soo real (most of it anyway). It was a video by one of the artists of the earlier Worms games, who spent 3 years on that video IIRC
I don't have a link though...

Some pics looks too perfect, some appear too sharp. And on some she does not look natural, for example here:http://www.this-wonderful-life.com/Part1a.jpg

...on the pic with the baby the child looks especially strange, as if it would look on something behind the woman.

Best looking pics (in the sense of most real looking) are IMO the BW pic left of the gallery http://www.this-wonderful-life.com/Face%20(gallery).jpg and the close up of her mouth http://www.this-wonderful-life.com/...est)%20lips.jpg

Ok, here's why CGI never looks real; basically, CGI artists never put dust in the air. The area between your eye and the object you are looking at has thousands of objects blocking the image in its pure view.

Uhm... no. Dust particles shouldn't be much of a problem to any decent renderer (well, at least the raytracing kind). It just takes a while to draw a large amount of them, that's all. If making CGI look real was as simple as adding dust, everybody would be doing it already.

Same reason that architecture renderings don't look "real". Real isn't quite as beautiful, it's got dust in the air, gunk on the ground, etc.

I heard a big part of rendering is gettting tiny hairs. Even little hair like things on leaves make a great deal of realism. And of course on humans. They are getting closer, but they aren't there yet.

If you look at this close-up, you can see her cornea (surface of her eye) is very bumpy. That's not human. Unlike the surface of skin, the cornea is extremely smooth. Otherwise, you get big problems.

Part of the problem is the poses aren't natural (or even posed well as if for a modeling shot).

It depends on the lighting. Generally you can't see it, but the white part of the eye is dimpled. You are correct about the lens area though.
