The Vibe is uglier, though they're both hideous.

Mazda 3 hatch.

For the record, Creative would be Toyota...they designed virtually the entire car.

I thought gays were supposed to have a good sense of style. The Vibe is certainly the better looking of the two.

Better than the Mazda too.

The plastic alone, and the angular late-90s Pontiac styling makes it fugly.

They all have moving parts (harddrive) and an LCD -- you don't want to be dropping these.

My brother's dropped his original Nomad Zen a few times, and it still works...has a few dents though.

The original Zens are pretty durable, seeing as they're aluminum and not plastic.

You gotta be kidding me? You don't see how they look alike? Come on! I'm the (second?) biggest anti-fanboy for Apple here, but I can acknowledge that Creative wanted to make their player look more like an iPod.

Is there an iPod I haven't seen? Could you post a picture of that iPod that Creative "stole" the design from? The only thing they have in common is that they both has bottons on the front...

It's tacky comparing different year models and different styles. The plastic trim is not a constant.

Your Mazda3 reminds me too much of the Honda hatchback, which just screamed Ricermobile.

It's not the same thing. I'm not saying they copied the techonology, I'm saying they are copying the style. It'd be like a company which made TVs that were similar in style to Sony or something.

Ok, maybe it wasn't the best idea to use to compare (I was a bit in a hurry)... but then let's say that the first tv ever made had buttons on the side. Then a new company came and created a tv with buttons on the front instead... would all other tv-companies who made tv's with buttons on the front just be copycats of the first company who did it?

Fine...here's the '04 models from a similar perspective.

The new Vibes do look quite a bit nicer, but are still way too angular. The rear tail-lights with the protruding blackish separaters are still ghastly.

And I HATE how Pontiac puts the reverse lights on the bumper. Talk about stupid...

Got a few good PMs from Aggie. Anyway, I don't need a 'mini', Asher. I'm looking at regular sized, iPod 4G, Creative Zen Touch, and Dell (thingy).

And come on, about the 'button' anology. The differences from previous Zens include a more 'bright' look and a touch pad (not including moving the buttons, if you think that's the main thing).

You can use the iPod as a portable drive. The auto-sync thing is definitely stupid, which is why I turn my auto-sync off.

Pros and Cons of the iPod (and there is one killer reason why you should not get the iPod right now)

First, forget all of the tech geek stuff about which player has the best audio. The hard tech stuff are all about equal. What makes the difference are the earphones. If you use stock ones, the sound is crap. Spend some bucks and get a decent pair.

iPod Pros
1) The design is a hell of lot better than the Nomads or anything else out there. The nomad looks cheap. The iPod's exterior contstruction is much better.
2) iPod can be used as a portable HD and it supports WMA in a way (iTunes can automatically convert WMA files to AAC).
3) The 12-band equaliser is great and there are about 15 pre-set levels.
4) It's not a Creative Technology product.
5) 12 hours is fine for regular daily use.
6) It's friggen great to have my entire music collection in something so tiny. Okay this true for most MP3s, but it still amazing.

iPod cons
1) Non-removable battery
2) 12 hours battery use is still a bit too short
3) Stock earphones are crap (but they usually are)
4) I ordered mine through the Internet. It took two weeks to deliver in Hong Kong)

Big reason not to buy an iPod right now.
I've had mine for two weeks, only two weeks, and it has big time crashed. Something's gone wrong with the hardware. So now I have to take it in to get it fixed and who knows how long that will take. If it took two weeks to get it delivered then it will probably take months to get it fixed.

My theory is that the iPod is so popular that Apple is rushing to keep up with demand and quality control is going out the window. Or maybe I just had bad luck.

Why do you have it as iPod pros? Most mp3 players has 2, 3 and 6, while 5 is a con, not a pro... And with 1 I can't agree much... ok, it's better looking than most mp3 players, but it looks like crap compared to Zen Touch... And 4 is a con, not a pro, while if this where about Zen Touch it would be a pro if it said: "It's not an Apple product"

The Zen Touch only has a four-band equaliser. Does it support AAC files?

The 24-hour battery charge is meaningless for daily use. On a daily basis, I'm not going to use my iPod for more than 12 hours so what's the point of having additional battery capacity. But, I would have preferred 16 hours which would cover me for trans-pacific flights. Then again, I'm only taking those flights once a year.

As for Apple vs Creative, I'd take Apple any day, yes, even though my iPod is on the blink. I'm pissed off about it, but I still wouldn't buy the Nomad, which says something about the Nomad.

The auto-sync feature actually makes sense if you think of your computer as the "master" and the iPod as the "slave." Thus, the conents of the iPod is always synced to your computer, but not necessarily the other way around.

The Zen's equalizer/DSP is actually much more powerful than the iPod's. Look at the EAX settings, for one.

And it doesn't support AAC files, but you can convert AAC files to WMA files easily. (your argument)

AAC is a rare format, the only company using it is Apple really. It's way more expensive to license and technically on par with WMA, so companies opt for WMA instead.

Your battery has only so many "charges" in it. If you charge the thing daily, you're killing it faster. Further, since the battery is not removable, it's a helluva lot more expensive to replace.

With the Zen, you charge it less -- it lasts longer. You can buy an extra battery, giving you 48 hours if you want...swapping for long trips. You can easily replace the battery if it fails.

It says something more about the buyer, since everyone I know who has had a Nomad product hasn't had any problems like that, while I know quite a few people with iPods that went south.

Apple's quality is HIGHLY overrated. They're pretty terrible, actually.

Glad to hear all these nice things about the Creative Zen. I'm about to get one of the 20GB models myself with the money I got from jury duty the week before last.

From what little I know about these and the iPods, the Zen is slightly heavier, but this isn't really an issue for me, seeing as their weight range is so small anyway. The battery lasts ages longer than the iPod one or sure. Apparently aslo Creative's packaged media software is really really good. I have been told the biggest con about the Creative is that to connect it with a computer you have to install the driver software. A small one, I think, seeing as I will be dealing with the same half dozen computers most of the time, and I can withstand carrying a backup CD of drivers around with me whenver I'll need to use another computer (I carry some CD-Rs with essential software around much of the time anyway).

I didn't know the iPod couldn't be used to store other files on it, and also did not know that you couldn't extract files back off of it onto a computer. Are these things really true?

Tingkai - I'm not biased against either ATM, having been a long-time fan of Creative for their other audio products, and having drooled over my friend's iPod for some months now, and got to use it a few times - but if I accept most of what is said here at face value it sounds like Creative has the edge, at least when comparing players with the same storage together. In my part of the world the Creative has the price edge at the moment as well, by around $100US equivalent.

The iRiver however, looks gorgeous, and as far as I'm concerned is the current Uber-model I'd get if I could afford anything.
