Man, there's a lot of false rumours about the iPod here.
You can use it as a portable hard drive.
You don't have to use the auto-sync.

I'll admit I don't know much about EAX. Does it make a difference with headphones or does it require a 5.1+ system for full effects.
It has added features, but most of the stuff I wouldn't use (like increase or slowing down the playback speed).
The battery thing is a problem, but it's a trade off. I'm not a tech geek. Design matters for me and the iPod simply looks better and it does what I want it to do and it does it well.

It says something more about the buyer, since everyone I know who has had a Nomad product hasn't had any problems like that, while I know quite a few people with iPods that went south.

It's a personal thing for me. A couple of years ago, I spent about six months trying to get an interview with Tam, the Creative CEO, for a story. He refused and the PR support was terrible. So the way I see it, if he wasn't willing to help me do my work then I'm not going to give him any of my business.
For the iPod, I went to the repair centre and they offered me a replacement on the spot, but mine's engraved so they'll have to special order it. Will take about two weeks. In the meantime, they lent me a 3rd generation iPod as a loaner.
That's extremely unusual service in HK.
So I'm not happy the iPod went on the blink after just two weeks , but for the customer service.

EAX on the Zen is just 2-channel, since that's what headphones are. In addition to the basic equalizer stuff we've been used to for ages, it also has the novelty speed up/slow down thing (Nomads have had that since like...2000), things like noise reduction (eliminates "clicking' and the sort you sometimes get in bad rips/old vinyl recordings), make it sound like it's in a stadium/living room/garage/etc).
The DSP in the Zen is far more capable and actually reprogrammable, which is why they can do things. It can cancel echos, add echos, etc.
Of course, what most people use it for is the equalizer. But the novelty things like what I mentioned are just examples of how much more powerful the Zen DSP is.

Why don't you spend six months trying to get an interview with Jobs then.
Why would the CEO of a tech company donate their time to an interview with a non-tech journalist?
Creative PR was great. Back when I worked for SidGames, they sent me a free GeForce 2 to review, free of charge. They also had engineers answer my questions for me without complaint.
As for the customer service, read my post about my friend that was in Europe when his iPod arrived, so didn't qualify for the $200 rebate he was entitled too. Customer service were jackasses.

This could be a big selling point for a lot of people, but me, I don't like the sound created by a lot of these things. I have no desire to hear music as if it was being played a garage.
And I like the cricks and hiss on my LPs. It gives it warmth that you can't get from cold digital musi

He was offered a rebate if he mailed in a form within 30 days. If he was going away then he should have mailed it before he left.
If the bit about 30 days was buried in extremely fine print then that would be a different story, but from what you told us, he's only got himself to blame. Actually I would also ***** at the retailer for not making it crystal clear that the rebate had to be sent in within 30 days.

This works on non-Mac systems now? Last I heard, it was only possible on Macs (which makes it completely useless).

This could be an old issue. The ipod loaner they gave me is an older model and it doesn't work as a portable HD, but the new model that I had did work.

The retailer is Apple.com, and he bought it directly from them and didn't know about the 30-day policy.
He bought it while he was in Germany for the summer as an exchange student, and it was mailed to his house in Seattle for when he came back.
It was then when looking through all of the documentation and receipts they sent him that he discovered the 30-day policy.
He called and begged and pleaded and they wouldn't budge.
Real customer service is bending over backwards to help the customer. That's how you do it. This guy is a recent PC->Mac convert, and he was obsessed and infatuated with Apple (to the point of getting a job at the Apple store), and now he f*cking hates them.
Where I work, if a customer has a serious problem and it's 3am -- not only does someone answer the phone for them, we'll wake up a developer or team of developers to work on it ASAP. That's customer service, and that's how you retain customers.
Retaining customers is something Apple should look into, given their shrinking marketshare.
