Which was the point of my experimental French Joke thread...

Some of the jokes I posted on there were at least as bad as the jokes on the thread posted by IR, but not a flutter of outrage for almost 24 hours when I checked back.

In fact it merely encouraged more anti-French and other 'racist' jokes from a number of other posters! Personally I don't know what the fuss is about these jokes myself, but if you are going to come down hard on one type of joke - then you should be consistent.

I can't comment after that as the thread has been deleted - I can only assume that the management of this site was so embarrassed by this implied hypocrisy that they felt compelled to wipe out all trace of it...

Maybe we could get a topped thread of apology from the Poly management admitting their double standards?

You can assume all you want... and as usual, you are wrong.

It's more a difference in a how the mods handle threads.
My prefered method is to delete offensive threads... which I did when I finally saw the french thread. I've been busy at work this week and did not spend a lot of time watching the OT...

The other thread was handled by another mod... and most of the other mods don't delete like I do, they just close things...

So if you are looking for an apology... maybe you should look in the mirror, and make one yourself for starting a thread that insulted people.

Mobius, I don't think theres any hypocrisy. If a third of the population of France had been wiped out in the space of less than a decade, or such "jokes" used to literally ruin the lives of Poles for years on end, then you could expect the same reaction to jokes about France or Poland. If members of your family had been tortured and killed, and half a century later your family are still under attack from people using these "jokes" then you can bet that when you grow up, you'd have a bad reaction to it.

A joke is always a well timed and well-said comment at the expense of someone... I have yet to see a joke that doesn't laugh at someone or somethings expense, but such are the circumstances of people's lives that you will cause actual hurt if your "joke" crosses a line with some people.

There's no hypocrisy there, it's just a fact of life, so drop your crap and try to see things from other people's points of view.

Does one get offended by a joke one tells to oneself? The operative term is "at the expense of"... meaning the difference between telling a joke about someone else, and telling the same joke about yourself, is the difference between giving something as a gift, and having it stolen off you.

I'm not condoning the jewish joke thread, but I do begin to have a problem when jokes like that are clamped down on (rightly so) on the one hand, and vicious overtly anti-gay and anti-french attacks in the past have been tolerated despite complaints to the fact.

You know damned well that was not my intention, so please don't pretend to be so stupid...

The only reason I even posted my experiment was to prove that at least for the first 24hrs of its existence no one cared that the French were being insulted in a thread, whereas it took only minutes for the other thread to register outrage.

My intention was to return later and explain the reason for the posting of the thread and to discuss its outcome, but I can't now.

You can continue to call me names now instead of actually addressing the situation...

He claimed it was an experiment minutes after posting it, and actually ended up insulting nobody. If it was meant to be an offensive thread, it failed miserably. If it was intended to highlight the fact that some "offensive" jokes seem more acceptable than others, then it worked for at least the two people who commented on it, and probably more who didn't. The fact that there wasn't a mod online and so the two were completely incomparable was an unfortunate circumstance that ruined the experimental nature of the thread, and rendered most of the argument about blame and double-standards completely pointless. MOBIUS in this thread is "acting the ass", but MOBIUS in the other thread was just acting. Since the thread in question has now been deleted, and going by the number of people offended by it (i.e. approximately zero) I don't think an apology thread will do anything to help matters for anyone. Not to mention the fact that there's no way it would be a sincere apology because there's nobody to apologise to and nothing remaining to apologise for.

Banning MOBIUS straight off would be rather silly IMO, he's done no worse than anyone else who posted "jokes" in that thread, or the many that have come before, and banning him for being a jackass would mean banning half the OT if we were doing "fairness".
