This is a very appropriate time for this, the american public will feel terrorised and vote Bush in, and the circle will continue to turn. [shrugs] It was kinda predictable considering how close the election was running. I think its going to be many years before this scenario will be laid to rest.

The more I think about it the more I think that Bin Laden wants Bush for four more years.
Fact of the matter is, at the moment the GOP have the easier job of spinning this because, quite frankly, it affirms the war on terror is still pertinent and Bush is the incumbent, while Kerry cannot be seen to be capitalising on an enemy's word.
So while Bush has the easier job, why didn't Bin Laden actively challenge the GOP line? Moreso, why did he affirm that the war on terror is an extremely important issue? The reason is quite obvious really. While Bush continues to go off on overseas field trips, anti-US hatred is stirred up and they look for their leader, Bin Laden, who is apparantly quite cosy because of Bush's incompetence. Bin Laden gets more recruits, will be safer for four more years at least while he has support, and the US will fall into a state in which its armed forces simply cannot keep up.
Brilliant strategy really.

As crass as I feel spinning this back to "how it affects the election," I think at the very least Bush has to feel somewhat relieved that this has now pushed the missing-explosives story off the front page.

Bin Laden likes Bush because Bush is the greatest terrorist recruiter of them all
Also his incompetence works in Bin Laden's favor
