BTW, I actually agree with Kuci on the Queen. It seems like she assumes the function of Head of State like a robot would.

BTW, the former Lieutenant Governor of Quebec was dismissed because he threatened to block a separation vote by the Parliament in the case of a Yes.

Problem is, the PQ couldn't get rid of him through normal means (there was no legal reason to remove him) so they dirtied his reputation in a mediatic campaign so that he was forced to resign.

Dirty, dirty politics.

btw, on the weather threadjack.... True Story..

I once had the pleasure of setting up a woman with a distinct southern accent in a rental car. Being the dead of winter I reasoned it would be a good idea to show her where the snow brush/ice scraper (double ended) was.

"How does that work?" she asks

Alright. She is new to Canada apparently. I will explain.

"This end is used to brush the snow off the windows and the other end is to scrape the ice."

"Won't that scratch the paint?" she asks

He was great! Him and the CCF.

That's part of why people here scratch our heads when the RoC heaps on abuse about our right-winged nature.

We're in the middle of an election. The NDP are skewering Klein for not having cut the deficit fast enough and are complaining that Alaska and Norway have larger trust funds from the proceeds of oil.

Of course they, and the Liberals, also expect that Klein should have spent more at the same time... In short, Klein will probably win again. Almost guaranteed.

The troubling part is that the seperatists are polling 9% (up from about 2%). I'm not sure how many more federal elections it will take before they actually gain seats, and then we're in trouble.

I was going to ask you about the Alberta election but I didn't want to go too far off topic.

I mentioned my fear of growing separatism out west earlier (in another thread I believe). Alberta can actually afford to do it.

Now that Russia has ratified Kyoto the feds will be looking for ways to fulfill it on this end. Wonder what is coming down the pipe and how well will it go over?

I knew you'd asked, that's part of why I reported. I'm surprised they are up to 9%. Actually, I'm a little worried they might translate that into a seat or two. On the bright side, someone dusted off the Socred label and they are standing in a few ridings. That might pull enough votes away...

You have reason to be concerned. I don't want to see it happen, but I'm pretty sure that if it ever became a big enough issue out here, we would not balk on the first ballot. If pissed off enough to be asked to vote, Albertans would vote to bolt.

Then we'd all be in a real pickle.

We sure would. If only the federal government would stick closer to the Constitutional division of powers (and the provinces quit whoring for the money) the problems could be avoided. Both Quebec and Alberta and Canada would be the better for it.

It's not just that, Wezil. The 7% gain for the seperatists is almost entirely due to the rhetoric of the last election. It has nothing to do with policy, it has eveything to do with the PM of Canada using this province as a whipping boy during a national campaign.

When some moron on some message board beaks off about rednecks, people can and do laugh that off. When the Prime Minister gets in on the act people say, 'WTF?'

The truth is that every single drop of 'redneck' or 'bad Canadian' serves to break down the identification of people out here with the nation. Drop by drop the support for seperatism grows. In short, Albertans see more and more to repel them from Confederation.

It's not the money, despite what you may hear. We don't begrudge PEI or Manitoba some of the wealth that petrodollars have brought us, within reason. It's the insult on top of the money that will lead this province to cause a crisis.

Go ahead, Tingkai, ignore it.

You won't be able to ignore it any more after the first vote is held. It will break the country.

Neither one of us want that, so why are we fighting about this?

The separatists have been around for years and they always remain a fringe element on the looney right. As for the AA party ( you would think that people would remember CRAPP), its support probably has more to do with some conservatives who are fed up with Klein, but can't bring themselves to vote Liberal or NDP.

Go ahead and laugh, Tingkai. Seperatists have never polled 9% out here. If they gain seats they will be in as good a position as the Liberals or NDP to replace the PCs as the government come the change, and the change will come.

Nevermind that you should admit that there is a problem when one of the provinces polls 9% for seperatism.

I realise the cause would not be centred on Alberta's financial position, just as it is not finances driving the cause in Quebec. It is the combination of attitude and policy from the feds that contributes to alienation. Take the 7% increase from rhetoric and add to it the increase from a new NEP and the increase might even get the attention of smug easterners.

You are right. Martin as usual was wrong (from a national unity point of view), but it plays well politically in this province.

As the CBC, Globe and Mail and Macleans continue to tell us, you have to be an eastern Liberal to be a good Canadian. Haven't you figured that out yet?

I'm a long time resident of Canada's only other consistant 'have' province and I don't have a problem with equalization either. It is what good neighbours do, but I do not want to feel taken advantage of.

And again, I fear both are on the horizon.
