If so, why?

A few reasons . . .
1. It leaves a large geographic hole in the middle of our country. Atlantic Canada will be physically separated from the rest of the country and I wonder how long the rest of the country will last. ( I have assumed Quebec would want to keep its existing boundaries).
2. I like Canada. Its not a perfect country but we do many things well and I don't want anyone to begin deconstructing it.
3. Implicit in a desire to leave is some concept the current system has wronged Quebec in some fashion. I cannot accept that. In fact, Quebec seems to enjoy favored status LOL.
4. Where would we get our prime ministers?? Aren't they always Quebecers??
On the flip side I can see some positives if it didn't have to mean the destruction of the country
a) We might be able to see someone other than the Liberals lead the country for a while
b) Some economic realities might hit home to Quebec nationalists. Quebec has been the largest have-not province for years and the biggest net recipient of transfer payments. There are also a LOT of federal institutions within Quebec. In a fair separation where Quebec assumed a portion of the national debt as part of the purchase price of buying federal assets within Quebec, it would be interestign to see how the Quebec economy fared

I, too, agree with Flubber's points.

Yes we have special treatments....half of the time. But can you agree with me that half of the time we are penelized for being in Quebec? Economicly, politicly but mostly culturaly? Can you agree that our culture is different? Those reasons make up for almost all people that want have an independant Quebec.
I see Canada's situation as 2 countries in one. 2 inmates that have to live in the same cell but just cant get along because of what their parents told them about their callmates family and all, eventhough they really want to. That's how I feel.
|
To this I have to say, "Isn't half the time enough?" It's not like Quebec has 1/2 the population of Canada.
And as a former British-Columbian, don't talk to me about being penalized economically, politically, etc. Sometimes it seems like Quebecers (just like Ontarians) assume Ontario is Canada, and that they're the only ones constantly getting shafted. We are 10 inmates in the same cell, not 2.
Further to Flubber's second point, the first seperation from Canada would be like the first crack in a dam. It would lead to the breakup of Canada, whether to several independant regions or by absorption into the US.

Of course I've also heard the natives in northern Quebec would try to break off from Quebec and rejoin Canada. |
Actually it is highly likely that the native groups that occupy a large portion of the Quebec landmass would want no part of an independent Quebec. Then you get into interesting questions as to the ability of people from other "nations" to secede.
How could Quebec which would be asserting its right to a separate nation deny the same right to obvious and dicstinct other nations.

Yes, I remember people discussing many ideas along those lines. The idea being that the strength of so many natural resources would enable the new country to do as it pleased. However, the reality is that the people of those regions would never see eye-to-eye politically. BC votes federally to upset the Ontario juggernaut, but they are really quite left-leaning, as opposed to Alberta, which is totally on the right.
