How about give users the option to add/subtract words to a censor list, much like we can block users. Certain words that only have obscene uses would of course be automatically censored.

Non-issue to me. I mean, while ***-for-tat and latin phrases might get censored every once and a while, we still know what was basically being said without every word that has a double-meaning (one innocent, one not-so-innocent).

Plus, there's just the fact that we can still say these things, just in different ways.

The ***** **** on the floor.
The dog pooped on the floor.

***-for-tat
quid pro quo

etc.

I've only ever seen it used on Apolyton as Magna *** Laude. Anyone wishing to refer to ****, or the ejaculatory action which produces it, has surely got enough synonyms which they could use to bypass the autocensor anyway. Even "come" is an acceptable spelling for *** with the same sticky meaning, but that isn't censored.

(/edit. Turns out that particular synonym is censored. How ironic.)

Maybe if Apolyton was a (family-friendly, no cursing allowed) porn site where people were too busy being lewd to actually consider their posts, then it would be a good idea to censor it, but since it isn't, and discussion is generally somewhat higher than "bodily-fluid" on the use-of-language scale, I really don't see the point of continuing to have it censored.

Maybe the whole issue should be put up to a vote? Think of the fun--smear campaigns, attack ads, the lot. Then of course all the attempts to woo the undecideds (i.e the 50000 members with 0 posts).
