Where's the 2000ish Prediction Thread? I tried to search the archive for "predict" and "prediction" and "forecast" but nothing came up. I'm sure everyone's predictions came true there since everyone's a psychic or a fan of one.

I don’t want to wait any more to congratulate you. Not only I understand and approve that when the whole world keeps telling you what sort of president to elect, you choose the opposite, but frankly I would have done the same. As a matter of fact, I did the same when I re-elected Charles De Gaulle in the past (Well, Charles De Gaulle was not exactly made of the same stuff as G.W.B., but he did bother some people abroad too).
But this decision of yours is also the correct one because it gives a chance to G.W. Bush to pursue the pre-emptive war he has started in Iraq, and ultimately to collect the glory he deserves. Giving such an opportunity to Kerry would have been specially unfair.
If another reason was necessary to justify the re-election of G.W.B., I would mention the budget deficit, the manageability of which, once demonstrated, would give to him a leading position on the list of applicants for the next Swedish economy prize.
I am also impressed by the observation that G.W.B. receives direct advice from God, which is a unique asset for a government. With the notable exception of Joan of Arc, we have never been able, on this side of the ocean, to durably secure His assistance, and He knows nevertheless than we could have use it more than once.
I wish you, my dear American friends, to enjoy as much as you can the next four years which will be the last presided by G.W.B.
Friendly yours,
DAVOUT
P.S. : Next time your President get in touch with God, could he be so nice as to suggest that He allocates some blessings to the EU, with one being specifically earmarked for France. Thanks. |

Maybe this will help facilitate a multi-party system, but that is unlikely.
This does portend the much more rapid decline of American prestige and influence in the rest of the world. America was simply not trusted under Bush, and not that it looks like Bush has be confirmed as "what America wants" then America simply won't be trusted at all. Errent spending and bad military policy will weaken us greatly; we will be in ever more massive debt with little way out and have an over-extended military. All this will lead to the U.S. not being much worse off relative to where it could have been; fewer resources, few or no true allies, less military reach.
The world will move on without us though. Honestly, however, it does make me consider leaving the country and living in Europe (my fiance' is greatly upset too). I am torn between my desire to live in a country in which I have confidence and my partiotic duty to try to improve the nation.
I am not sure when the political situation in America will change. It is possible we will enter into a cycle of violence between us and the Middle East, but certain we will be in quite adversarial positions for a long time. If there are more terrorist attacks, then Bush might be able to successfully claim they were inevitable, and one might see a long term U.S.-ME violence cycle much like the Isreal-Palestine one; this would ensure more Bush-like presidents and views. Hopefully this can be avoided, but I can see it going either way.

Four years ago, did anyone expect things to have gotten as bad as they have done? Granted, the September 11 attacks were the catalyst, but now Bush has arguably as much kudos from his electoral triumph as from the terrorist attacks.
I expect:
More economically unsound tax cuts and spending increases.
Same with the draft, although the whispers will become serious arguments. The right-wing media will begin to quietly advance the case for the draft. At least one senior figure in the Republican Party will come out and support it.
At least two more wars. The Bush government is addicted to them, and they've already 'blooded' the American people with the Iraq campaign. At least one of the wars will be in the Western hemisphere.
The ultra-conservative tendency will achieve 'critical mass' and establish itself for two or more generations, regardless of the 2008 election.
Trans-Atlantic relations will continue to sour, with more trade disputes than ever. The American Right will continue to spew lies about the Oil-for-Food 'scandal', despite the lack of evidence.
A senior Republican will suggest that "we should take Armageddon seriously".
More anti-gay stuff, especially in the schools.
