In 50 years, when far too much of the country is old and grey and still working for pennies, people will look back and wonder why we didn't have more kids, when we could see what all the population models were predicting.

Good point. Even if he showed he could be as good a CinC, people would be reluctant to change horses in mindstream (in the famous words of FDR).

As to Kerry's attacks on Tora Bora, the missing HE, etc., most people understoond this attack to be misplaced as it was clear that Bush had properly delegated the actual conduct of the war to the generals. Even if these events were screwups, Bush never blamed the generals, for which at least in part the generals came out strongly for Bush. In the end, these attacks may have actually hurt Kerry as they seem directed at our fighting men and not Bush.

No. As it was, it was very close with Johnson's VP, Humphrey, who never broke from Johnson's Vietnam policy. I think Johnson would have gotten just a few more votes than Humphrey and would have won the election.

(Also, note that Johnson was a Southerner and Humphrey was a Northern Liberal. This factor by itself would have gotten Johnson a few more Southern states.)
