I am having the exact same problem... I came here in hopes of a solution. what's weird in my case is, it was running fine on my computer like a month ago, on Windows 2000. I then upgraded my computer, but am STILL running Windows 2000, (wanted to avoid getting new software, and i had no major issues with Win2000) not a whole lot changed on my system aside form adding memory and RAM. (new hard drives, but the data was copied over straight) so i have no clue what's going on... :-/
oh, well i suppose i shoud give my basic system setup... though since he is running XP and i am running 2000, i suspect the problem is much deeper, because our two systems are really quite different...
Windows 2000 SP 4
a GIG of RAM
Pentium 4 3.20GHz Processor
the drive it is located on has 62 GIGS free, so don't think memory is a problem... I tried the minimum settings as well as the maximum when installing... i tried patching it as he did, i can't even get it to display the intro screen.

very strange...........i'm probably wrong about this, but anyone else run CTP2 on a P4 3.0 ghz and above?(that appears to be the only thing you share in hardware?).
I take you have both just installed the origional game and the Activision patch - no mods or other customised stuff?

yeah. i wonder what they changed to make it work. odd.
and i will dig through that thread (16 pages, it's a lot of reading) but is it normal for the computer's turns to take as long as they do on the playtest version? I think it's great i can finally get credit for my cities over 50 and such, but i had nothing to do, so figured i could afford the time for a science victory. just two other countries left on the map, and it takes a LONG time for them to finish their turns, even if i turn off 'see enemy moves' . it wasn't like this before. if i turned off the see moves option, it only took a few seconds before, even if i had more opponents than i do now. now it's like, 2 or 3 minutes, which doesn't sound like much till you have to sit through it, and i am glad there are only 2 other countries left. and it only got bad when the opponents had amassed a lot of units. but playing slowly is better than not at all

That sounds too long to be normal. Does it stick on one AI turn? It could be theres something buggy happening on that one AI's turn. Try saving and reloading the game, the pause usually disappears when I do this. Of course thats not ideal and it would be nice to know whats causing such a long turn.

it sticks for a while even when the bar is black. both turns of the remaining countries take about the same. it happens EVERY turn. the time varies slightly... but it's always long... I'd have to test, but i suspect that if there were more countries, say 6 or so, it could take up to 10 minutes to get through a turn. I'm glad i wiped out a couple oppnents early on. it would take a while to test though, as it gets progressively worse the more units there are, so it would not show up right away. I found one guy in the playtest thread who had the same problem, but he never got a response... it was early in the thread, so a few builds ago.
I quit the game yesterday and came back to it today, and it's the same.... maybe a bit better, but not much.

I've had a similir experience while playing the newest playtest, and as a result I have stopped playing it.
I think it may have to do with the Ai pathfinding program, but I'm not sure. Try posting in the source code thread, you might get better/faster reults.

is there anything in the works to correct the problem? i typically play long games, i like going through the whole tech tree and all that, so there typically are a lot of enemy units on the map...
