It didn't really "strike a nerve" with me. I'm from Maryland and didn't vote for Bush. I just thought that the picture was disingenuous.

That's not our fault. Nebraskans never wanted slavery, never made slavery legal and only accepted slaves from other states because the Supreme Court made us.

Actually your cracker Governor at the time vetoed a bill that was going to abolish slavery but luckily they overrode his veto.

It took to USA 5 years to build up democracy in Germany after WW2. Japanese democracy took 8 years. Do you expect things to happen instantly? Iraq at the moment of liberation was much less developed than Japan in 1945.

Those places both had million man armies occupying them, cooperative population, and overwhelming political support. The parallel is not accurate nor is this World War 2.

And so what? Did you except something different? Do you want democracy to be easilly installable like in Civ1? Now Iraqis will have democracy and freedom in 12 years, without this war they would never be free from Saddam.

When the Secretary of the Army, Colin Powell, and every other General with a brain says, "we need 500,000 troops to successfully occupy this place," and it doesn't happen, you need to start asking questions.

When Senator Lugar, the best scholar on foreign affairs in the US Congress, calls the administration (his own party) handling of the occuptation, "incompetent," you need to start asking questions.

Alot has happened since 1945 chief.

Where are you from?

And indeed USA needs troops to maintain order in Iraq. Imagine what would happen if USA troops left Japan in December 1945.

It's not WW2. Iraq's overall cultural development is too close to medieval.

Imagine what would have happened if the US had tried to occupy Japan with 140,000 soldiers?

And by the way the Iraqi educational system USED to be the best in the entire middle east up until Saddam decided to be a dumbass and invade Kuwait. Baghdad was once the most advanced academic city in the world in it's time, far ahead of its European counterparts, before the Mongols burned it down.

In any case, you don't put young men in harms' way with one arm tied behind their back. If you are going to go to war then don't half ass the job.

There's absolutely no point in comparing Iraq in '04 and Japan in 1945. It's like comparing apples and ...and.....

....something really un-apple like...??

Not even Vietnam is a good parallel. There is no 'north iraq', no powerful outside allies, and the Iraqi people just aren't stirring up westerners sympathies much.

Phillipines is a good parallel, the US was fighting muslim Moros in the south for decades, slaughtering the enemy in large numbers while losing very few, however the muslims there just kept coming back for decades.

Heck I think the Moros are still fighting??

That struck me as an odd thing to say, too. It isn't Iraqi culture that's the problem, it's the radical Islam that was exported out of Saudi Arabia into the rest of the Muslim world.

I'm really bothered by people who think that Third World cultures have remained static since the Middle Ages with no changes from the end of the Middle Ages, to today.
