From my experience it's for all cities, not just a specific town...
The governors doesn't even know which town they're controlling, since when I for example transport a governor from one town to another and talks to him as soon as possible, he just says: "I've heard a new govenor has arrived in < insert city name >, which is good news" (or something like that), even though HE is the new govenor
And I get the same treatment everywhere, so it doesn't feel town-specific...

Increase Your PM Length

Just played it for a few minutes last night right before I was off to sleep. Could they not even afford to have a voice actor to do the cutscenes? Man, that made the CS horrid, or they just seemed like they were not complete or engaging.

Seems a little easy; the first three ships and sword fights were not even slightly hard. How in the heck do I save the game? Yeah, I'm too lazy to read a manual.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Click on the Map button while out to sea, and then pick the CD disk looking icon on the bottom, then save in one of the Slots. No, you can not name a save game, being like the original game back in 1987.
And as for hardness, the Apprentice Level is like a tutorial.

Another player playing on the second to top level (probably Bucaneer perhap) had his but handed to him.
So, right in step with the old game, but with the animation having a Fixaxis language and subtitles (or gibberish like Sim City, I guess, since I do not have that game).

And the game is fun, but some things may have been changed around a little to make it harder.

Yikes! I played Swashbuckler and the game got really, really hard! I actually think the jump from Rogue (IIRC) was a bit too high. I'm getting hosed by smaller crews and ships no matter what.

Five attempts to play, five CTDs.
Reinstalled between each--and I simply do NOT need to upgrade anything--I just did that recently and I'm over the specs for the game.

Yep... when playing Swashbuckler I'm having a very hard time beating anything, except ship combat and land combat, while on Rogue it's just too easy...

Land combat is also too easy, yesterday I played on Swashbuckler (just started a new game today) and had a fight where I had about 260 pirates, while they had 360+ soldiers... I won big time

I had lots of CTD's when I first installed the game. I removed Service Pack 2 for XP and the game worked fine.

Ugh! Perhaps I should wait for them to patch the game to make it more compatiable with SP2?

Damn it, big ships suck. They are good when boarding big vessels, but I vastly prefer a smaller and nimbler brigantine which can pepper away at the hostile ship and dodge cannonballs long enough to reduce the defender numbers so much that my crew'll have a field day, or better yet, the ship'll just strike its colours.

But then again, I always get so excited when given the opportunity of sailing on a huge flag galleon. I just can't resist it!

Indeed they are. The only real use for them that I've found is to ferry stuff (loot or men for a sacking operation), and in that sense it's good that you can keep them out of battle in your fleet.

I have always preferred small ships over big ones. Exactly for that reason, better manuverability. It hurts when I do get hit although.

In all sea related games like Pirates! orginial, Uncharted Waters and others, I have always preferred small ones over larger ones. That's how the English navy defeated larger navies back in early days of the English naval power.

And with the right upgrades, a small ship can be almost as strong as a big one. I have a royal sloop with the crew upgrade. It has a max crew of 187 and 20 cannons. It packs a mean punch for a ship that size.

Yeah, use your mobility to stay in their dead angles and keep hitting them. Never give them a chance to hit you with a broad side.

I played Pirates a lot, first on my Amiga, then on my Mac Powerbook, until I eventually grew bored and aquired Civilization ten years ago.

Okay, I need some more help. The sword fighting for me is just pound on the 4 key and hope the other guy goes for the 1 or 7 attack, which the 4 attack pwns. There has got to be a better way, cuz this only works on the weak captains. I remember not having any trouble with the c64 version.

I do not get the dancing at all, what am I supposed to be doing??? Do I look at the arm gestures of the daughter and try to time my moves to the beat of the music???

My favorite ship from the original was the Frigate, followed by the Fast Galleon.

The Frigate just plain rocked. Fast, manueverable, powerful. The Fast Galleon wasn't quite as good, but was the best you could get in the early going (favorite time period = 1560). Both could run rings around regular Galleons, whilst packing enough punch to deal with well-armed pirate hunters/pirates and having enough staying power to absord a hit.

I liked Barques and Sloops as well. I did do the 'ole take down the War Galleon with a Pinnace thing.

When dancing you're supposed to look at her arm gestures, so when she points to the right, you press '6' and if she points to the right but slightly towards you, you press '3' (or '4' and '1' for the left)... I haven't been able to find the difference to when she wants to go backwards or forwards though...

When she wants to go toward you she acts like she is pushing you away with both hands. She does a "move away from me" gesture. When she wants to move backwards, she raises both hands in a "come toward me" gesture.
