If you do a UofC search on google, the University of Calgary dominates the top of the list.

So much for everyone's theory. Looks like the University of Calgary is called the UofC the most.

UofC results referring to:
Calgary: 65,100
Chicago: 10,300
California: 9,860

Not even close...

I don't think I've ever heard of any branch of the University of California being refered to as U of C. I've only heard references to UCLA, Berkley, UC (not U of C) Irvine, UCSD, etc. Kind of like UBC in Canada.

So are you saying the University of Chicago is less prominent than say... the University of Calgary?

Not at all.

In fact, I have NO idea how you could take that to say ANYTHING about prominence.

The sense you use it in is oxymoronic. Why would something be famous and useless at the same time? Famous for being useless? I don't think so...

You came close to admitting it was prominent, but not quite.

... since you wanted to get pandatic.

You're not being pedantic.

You're being stupid.

I admit something is famous, and you argue I'm not saying it's widely known.

Chicago doesn't have a very prominent CS department, but neither does Calgary. The best CS school in Canada is still Waterloo.

Waterloo is indeed the best, but Calgary's is up there.

Gosling's research into what became known as Java was started and endorsed by the University of Calgary.

It is also one of the foremost schools of cryptography in North America, and the best in Canada. It also has a promiment HCI lab and research program.

I've since revised my opinion to that Chicago is a "classic" school.
