I think the Rolling Stones are definitely overrated.

Led Zepplin (who I like) was certainly overrated for a while, but I'm not sure enough about where they stand now to say that they are currently overrated. They are certainly a great band.

Aerosmith are certainly overrated.

The Doors were overrated in the 1970's, but they probably are not these days. Not the greatest band ever, but good writing (mostly), good hooks, and good drums with decent guitar make them still a good band.

Radiohead are another good band. A lot of people don't like them (imo) because they write complicated music that isn't always instantly accessible. Every album sounds different, and one cannot easily predict where a song is going. These features hurt their popularity in the short run, as it is hard for the casual music listener to immediately "get" a song heard on the radio, and it is hard for the casual fan to deal with their own expectations as the next album is so different from the last. But in the long run this band will stand the test of time and will bear repeated play and won't be outgrown by its fan base.

Nirvana was certainly overrated after Cobain killed himself, and probably still is. They were a good band of course, but not nearly as great as they seemed to many a few years ago.

I don't think David Bowie is overrated, except perhaps at times in his own mind. He has done so many great albums with so many other great musicians and with quite a number of different styles. Some of his albums are great albums, while others are more collections of good to great singles. But he does quality work throughout. Even when I don't like an album of his its more personal than a quibble about its quality.

Iggy Pop is great, and it is difficult to overrate him. He is a singer / songwriter and not a band, though he usually manages to put together a fine band capable of supporting his voice and lyrics. His sense of humor and excellent low voice make him one of my faves, but it's not for everyone.

Gun n Roses is probably the most overrated band in my opinion. I mean sure one can easily rip apart almost any pop artist and prove by their huge popularity amongst little kids and their contrived crap music sung by professional backup singers that they are overrated. But Guns n Roses are different in that they were overrated by a much broader segment of the population. The fact that they actually suck and are unpleasant to boot made them an amusing riches to rags story for people like me who never understood what the hell people saw in them in the first place.

Some really interesting picks some have made. Especially some of you all that say you like a particular band/singer but admit they are probably a bit overrated.

I think the problem many singers or bands have is that they stay around too long or rest on ther hits for too long.

I guess the person I understand least is Bob Dylan. As a song writer I can sort of understand why people like him but his voice is horrible. If that makes me shallow then I guess it will just have to, but I can't stand to listen to him sing.

I totally agree, I could never stand Dylan either. But when Hendrix or the Byrds covered his tunes they were good. A good writer and a painful performer in my book.

I'm a bit leery about answering these threads, since it seems that every time I say a band is bad/overrated, I soon end up loving it.

However, I'll have to say it: Pearl Jam.

The Grateful Dead.

One of the worst pothead experiences is smoking down in someone's van, and a friend of a friend invariably whips out his vaunted Tokyo bootleg featuring 45-minute drum circles over Garcias hideous caterwauling. I dont get..I just...dont...get it.

Guns 'n Roses are definitely not overated. I think their (and mainly Axl Roses') craziness deservedly gives them a bad name, but they were a hell of talented band, and Appetite for Distruction was an amazing album. People talk about how grunge music killed the hair bands, but the first death blow was dealt a few years earlier with that GNR album.

Nirvana were fantastic, but I'd probably agree they were overated if only because it would be hard for them to receive more post-Cobain accolades. If Cobain hadn't killed himself, they wouldn't be quite so highly thought of.

Personally, I'd probably vote for The Doors. There's lots of bands/singers I don't like but can recognize their talent all the same. I just can't do that with The Doors. Special mention has to go to the Rolling Stones, with a big qualification - certainly one of the best bands of all time, but they should have retired no later than 1980, and even that would have been pushing it.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Good nominations one and all, but no one has mentioned Black Sabbath. Ugh.

Edit: Also, Opeth is pretty horrible, but they might a bit new to be called overrated.

And GNR are hair metal.

Um, no. Poison, Cinderella, Motley Crue, Warrant - those are hair metal bands. Fluffy pseudo-hard music performed by talentless hacks who cared more about their make up than their music - that's hair metal.

Yeah, I think most people would consider GNR to be hair metal, especially in the 'Appetite for Destruction' Days. LOOK at Axl's hair.

Beatles overrated, not for their influence, which is great indeed, but for raw quality. Haven't heard all their songs, but they have some of the most pathetic lyrics I have ever heard, not to mention that I don't like the music itself either.

What about it? Look at James Hetfield or Kirk Hammet's hair during that time. How about Eddie Vedder or Kurt Cobain? Anthony Keidis? All hair metal?

In the Welcome to the Jungle video he teased it out as a joke, and after that he just had long straight hair. Long hair =! hair metal band.

Well he did in during that one period. If Kontiki says it is a joke, I'll take his word for it... but Slash had big hair throughout the period.

According to Wikipedia, it seems GNR was on the border:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_metal

quote:
1987 saw the release of Appetite for Destruction by Guns n' Roses, which skyrocketed to the top of the charts. Though only debatably hair metal, Guns n' Roses, led by controversial frontman Axl Rose, fit in well, wearing long hair and playing pop-metal. In contrast to other bands, they were not feminized in the slightest and incorporated influences from genres like thrash metal.

I've always thought of GNR as the transition group, the halfway point between hair metal and grunge.

They don't necessarily have big hair, but they have long hair. Take a look at any GNR video other than welcome to the jungle and tell me how Axl's hair is any bigger than Eddie Vedder's in Even Flow, Kurt Cobain's in Smells Like Teen Spirit or Anthony Keidis' in Under the Bridge.

In general, though, have a listen to a Poison or Motley Crue album and then pop in Appetite for Distruction and tell me how similar they are.
