Rommel, didn't you know that in a battle of horsmen vs swordsmen, the horsemen will often win? I'd never trade horses to the iroquois for iron, unless I were the Romans or the Celts ...

Probably matters more on who plays at the same time as moonbars? Not sure on that count - I forget when he plays I'd think anyone in US time zones would probably play close enough, depending on their personal schedule (work/etc.)

edit: What's this with mountain time zones and jackson's hole? Moonbars is UK from what I recall ...

I've tested PBEM war weariness with conquests and have seen effects that match how it is supposed to work in SP. Since we played without it in the first round, I won't throw in a new "leave or declare war" rule unless there is general interest...

The Worthingtons Manouvre is allowed until I hear some anecdotal evidence of it throwing off game balance in PBEMs, at least as much as the SoZ is claimed to.

Is there any reason not to get the first few turns in before alexman leaves?

Because of Alexlung's availability during the day Poly time (14:00-22:00 GMT), it looks like it might be best to have him after Aquaman but before the Bongo-Moon swing. However, unless Bongo and Aqua can play a turn in the morning, there's no way to get more than one turn a day in regardless.

Blitz sessions would likely be when Bongo and Moonbars can play in the afternoon- 14:00 to 16:00 GMT- (if alexman gets up as early on weekends), or if Aqualung were to pull an all-nighter. Care to let Paddy sub for ya?

So:
Aqua -> Alex -> Bongo -> Moon
-or-
Aqua -> Bongo -> Moon -> Alex
?

Also, if there's a chance Bongo can sneak in a turn in the middle of the day, he should go after Moonbars...

UTC is just newspeak for GMT.

I *could* sneak in the occasional turn during the day bur don't count on it. Even if I don't love my job I'd still like to keep it. Playing in the morning is also not an option.

0230? That's a late nighter. Moonbars is just getting home then. You'll need an all nighter for a blitz.

The good news is that:
Aqua > alex > Moon > Bongo
should allow 2-a-day whenever Bongo is able to sneak a turn past his boss.

I'll generate the game soon with your passwords from last round. Let me know quick if you need a new one for some reason...

Ok, I give. How do you change the difficulty on a PBEM scenario? The game keeps showing up at Regent. The box in the setup screen says 'custom'. I opened the file in the editor again and changed each player to 'emperor' in the scenario properties and resaved; no change. The only other difficulty tab I found was under custom rules for changing the level effects.

I've heard about settings depending on the last game played before loading, but I've never played Conquests at Regent. What gives?

Eh, that is actually a very good question. I've run into the same problem while trying to make a PBEM scenario, which in the end killed the game on the runway so to speak. Another problem is barb-activity, which also seems to follow it's own rules. I've read(but not tested) that you get the barb-activity you had in the last SP-game you started

I thought I had the solution somewhere in the old setup thread for my 'evil overlord' project but no.

I'll check my notes at home later, I think I managed to solve the difficulty level problem. Not 100% sure though (more like 78% actually) so if someone think they know the real answer, be my guest

yeah, the difficulty level is tricky if you use the editor.
in a PBEM i finally did it as follows: set the player data to custom and then set it for each player to whatever difficulty you want.
the game will still show regent when loading, but the corruption and happiness are at the level of the chosen difficulty.

There are a couple of things that can go wrong when setting up a scenario in PBEM.

1) The game might think the map is a different size than it actually is (this happens in SP too). To get around this, you should set the map size characteristics (OCN, tech rate, etc) to be the same for all map sizes in the scenario rules, and then it will not matter what size the game thinks the map is.

2) The difficulty level might get set to something other than what you want. To get around that, you should first select the difficulty level in the setup screen, and then specify the scenario. Even though the difficulty will be changed to show 'custom', it will actually be what you had there before. Note: I played a PTW game set up like sabrewolf suggests a while back, and the tech rate did not match the difficulty level, so that method is not reliable.

Rats, I just checked my evil overlord worklog and couldn't find any indication I solved the difficulty problem.

However, I found this on barb activity. It's from CFC but I haven't tested it yet.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showp...67&postcount=15
watorrey. C3C at least, ignores the scenario barb activity setting and uses the barb activity setting you choose in your last random game. The only way to know 100% what your current setting is, is to use Ainwoods seedbeast to check a .sav

Game On! Got spare money?

After giving it a few days, it seems like a simple solution: set the difficulty in the MP screen before loading the scenario, as alexman points out in his second point. It now shows Emperor in the box when the turn is loaded (very helpful I find in a PBEM to be reminded of such things when loading the save each turn).

Since this is the proper size map for 4 players, hopefully alexman's first point won't be an issue. Please let me know if you notice anything out of the ordinary.
