I bought the new GTA yesterday, and have been locked in my room ever since, except for now. (I had to use the bathroom, and so I figured that a good 'Poly visit was necessary too.)
Anywho, the game forking rules!!! Its way more realistic as compared to the past few GTAs. I'm quivering with joy at the thought of this masterpiece getting good graphics, and custom radio songs on the xbox. (Although to its credit it does seem to be stretching the limit of ps2 graphics.)
The soundtrack is better than the crappy 80's sound track of vice city. If you hate rap though then you may feel a little bit left out. If rap is a serious problem for you, then hang on for the XBOX version.
Bicycles are fun to ride althought they are very easy to fall off of.
The workout part of the game is quite fun, and when you get buff enough ,then more people will respect you.
"What's the big deal about respect?" you say. You can recruit gang members with higher and higher respect levles. and then you can load all of them in a car and go on drive by missions.
OMFG! There is sooooo much in this game. You can do everything from the past gtas (Except I think that they got rid of rampages ) There is even a jetpack!!! (with cheats at least)
Even cooler though,
2 PLAYER MODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of the game is based around gang stuff. One of the most fun aspects, is tagging, you get to run around and do graffitti.
I think that is how you claim your gang territory, but I'm not sure.
They've also gone the rpg route, by making it so that you can gain experience points in everything. Weapons, bicycling, motorcycles, cars, everything.
Your appearance is quite customizable. Hair and clothing are all up to you and your budget.
My one critique is that I haven't played any other games where you don't get to customize your character, where the character isn't white.
With the exception, of a few movie based games IIRC. But if anybody knows of any games that aren't based on a movie or tv series, where you can't custom create a character, and the character is black, please tell me.

I should slap you and my friend. Its a game, its not meant to be realistic and is far from it. Realistic would be going into your closet digging out Bessy and Munchkin and shooting people in real life. :P

Nope. Once you get to the right mission you'll see how territory works, its very fun.
quote: Also, you don't actually ever need to eat in the game. When your health gets low, go to your safe hizzy (safe house) and save. Your health will be full, nad you don't need to waste the $2 it takes to buy a meal. |
When you get "hungry" your muscle drops faster until you eat something.
quote: btw, has anybody tried the 2 player mode yet? I want to (although I'm alone right now) but I haven't a second controller. |
Yes, its not that great. You're stuck to one screen, its a pain in the ass to get in the same vehicle, and its even more of a pain in the ass when your friend decides to kill everyone in sight and then stop to try to get into a pain in the ass vehicle because his driving skills are so leet that he thinks he can shake a 5star wanted level. It all ends with him dying and me fending off all the cops, he then blames me for not working as a team and goes off on a ten minute rant why he just "isnt sure" about me... oh wait, I guess you wouldnt have that problem.
I guess it could be fun if you played with the right person.
As for the weapons skill, it raises fast enough once you start the gang (territory) wars.
The music is alright, but there's a lot less of it than in GTA:VC. Or so it seems. A lot of early 90s rap, a few decent rock and alternative songs, and a little bit of country. There are almost no commercials though, and the talk radio sucks ass.
edit: in one of the missions if you pay close attention to whats being said LSPD (Los Santos PD) will refer to itself as LAPD (Los Angeles PD)

Aw for shizzle homey1 (ditto dude!)
I guess b/c they invested more in gameplay etc. they had to cut somewhere else, and radio got snubbed. It is kind of part of the reason that I bought the last three gtas, but The gmaeplay is soo awesome htis time, that I don't care.
The one place that does has some funny audio clips, is in the ammunation. "God D*mn I sound like hot sh*t in that commercial!"
I just discovered the gnag wars thing, and Its awesome! I have 25 territories under control which makes me the biggest gang. But I will not rest until I own San Andreas!!!!!!
The one annoying thing about being the king of the hood, is when your getting set to go on a date with Denise, and hten boom TURF WAR! and you have to go and defend your turf.
DO the date missions do anything for you anyways? Do they play into the storyline at all? I read that if you pursue them 100%, then you can keep your weapons after you die and get arrested or something.

I never did bother going out with her. I didnt see the point in it, I watched my friend do it once, it was pointless. I had bigger things to attend to, I had a sprawling empire in the heart of the city. I couldnt be bothered to pay attention to some ho that should have burned anyway.
quote: Either way, I'm stuck on the damn lowrider race mission now. I hate the races. I sucked w/o nitro but now with it, I've got a slight chance. |
A word of advice, control is more important than speed. If you can find one of the pimpmobiles or lowrider trucks (I forget the name of them) use it instead of those long cars, they wont spin out as often. In my experience anyway.
Something that may sadden you, there are more than a few racing missions that you have to beat to advance the story line at certain points. Just remember control is more important than speed. Learning how to perform a pit maneuver and ride away from it without a hitch helps a lot too.
I wont give any specifics, but the nameless man from GTA3(the pc) makes a cameo appearance.

quote: But how can you play a game like GTA on a gamepad? I tried this game (GTA SA) for about an hour (just driving around, not doing any missions), and was really getting pissed at that gamepad |
IMHO, you have to do some of the missions and stuff before you can fully enjoy just roaming and shooting stuff in the game. You have to get your weapon skill, health muscle, stamina etc. ratings up before it can be cool.
quote: How do you get girlfriends? I'm only on like the 5th or 6th mission. Does it come later?[/qote]
you rescue this worthless chick from a burning building. The thing that was weird to me is she hails from Grove street but was hanging out in balla territory. WTF? The Families and the Ballas are mortal enemies.
[quote]A word of advice, control is more important than speed. |
So I have found. Slow and steady wins the race. However the nitro comes in handy on the long stretches when you need to catch up.
BTW, when you "Pimp your ride" and you get nitro and it says "Nitro 2x, Nitro 5x, and Nitro 10x" does that stand for how powerful it is, or how many blasts you get?

Can you suggest any alternative way the controls for the game could have been set up to make it logical? What is the most "logical" button to press for car-jacking somebody?
I'm confused... |
I haven't played much consoles (never owned one, never will), but I've played a few PS games at my friends place some years ago, mostly fighting games though...
Here you see a almost realistic picture of a PS joypad:

The numbers are help for showing what the controls are now and what I'd like them to be... I know they have some signs (like one of them is a circle), but I don't remember what is what, so numbers are easier
This is the current controls for GTA SA:
1) Enter/Exit vehicle
2) Reverse
3) Jump? Not sure, never used it
4) forward
And then there's this "joystick" on the other side, which is only used for left/right...
This is what I want them to be:
1) Forward
2) Enter/Exit
3) Jump (or whatever)
4) Reverse
And the "joystick" part should just stay as it is...
This is much more logic IMHO, since in all driving games for the PC (that I've tried) has the 'up'* key as forward and the 'down' key as brake/reverse, and basicly the setup on the keypad looks like those keys...
Ok, there's also a left/right on they keyboard, but the "same" buttons of the joypad wouldn't make it better...
* In case you're not sure what keys I'm talking about, it's these:
