A few years back I bought some clothes at Walmart and found them to be very poor quality. The jeans were made of a very thin fabric, the color faded in a month even though I used cheer brand laundry detergent, the stitching didn't hold up and the pockets tore out. In all the jeans lasted about two months where as I have Levi's which have lasted me for years.

Colo. Wal-Mart Makes Effort to Unionize

The National Labor Relations Board planned a hearing Thursday to consider the workers' request to be represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7.

"Wal-Mart workers don't have to be second-class citizens," said Ernest Duran Jr., president of the union, which also represents more than 17,000 grocery workers at King Soopers, Safeway and Albertsons stores.

Union officials argue the workers in the automotive service department are separate from the store and eligible for independent union representation. Wal-Mart officials disagree.

"With approximately 400 associates in that particular facility, we feel that more than 17 associates should have a say on such an important matter," said Christi Gallagher, a spokeswoman for Bentonville, Ark-based Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart said it treats its workers fairly and has an open door policy that lets each negotiate directly with management.

"Our associates see they don't have to pay hard earned money to do what they can do every day," she said.

The union is in negotiations with the Colorado grocery stores, which have cited competition from nonunion discount chains such as Wal-Mart in offering wage and benefit increases that have been rejected by workers.

Efforts to unionize Wal-Mart stores in the United States have failed, while in Canada, a government agency this year certified workers at a Quebec store as a union and told the two sides to negotiate. Wal-Mart has said it may have to close that store.

In the United States, the closest a U.S. union ever came to representing Wal-Mart workers happened in 2000. Eleven members of the store's meatpacking department at Jacksonville, Texas, store voted to be represented by the UFCW.

In a move it said was unrelated to the union vote, Wal-Mart eliminated the job of meatcutter company-wide, and announced it would only sell pre-cut, pre-wrapped meat.

The workers were offered other jobs at the store.

******************

Good luck to Walmart in fighting the unions!

Yeah, good luck to them in ****ing their workers regardless of the workers expressed desire.

What, they made you junior assistant night-shift leader at Mickey D's?

I guess that depends on whether or not you buy Nikes, designer shoes, gold-plated rims, and big stereo systems, or if you just buy the basics. There's also nothing wrong with getting a second job.

Here in San Diego, you don't even pay rent on Wal-Mart wages.

Pride is Noble?

Libertarianism goes against human nature, it is rationalized greed.

Ahem,

Pride is a part of describing one's image of one's self worth. To the extent one is comfortable with oneself I would argue Pride whilst Hubris .

Again descriptions of same motivations depending on whether one wishes to describe them flatterringly or otherwise.

I'm most definitely not an anarchist. I do support government, just a more limited version of it. I'm probably more "big government" than the average libertarian party member, (of course that still makes me a radical by conventional standards). I also support private property, so that puts me at odds with the "libertarian socialists".

I'm all over the map honestly. I dunno what I am. An independent.

Nope. Subtle distinction that talks to degree and moderation.

examples via Dictionary.com

quote:

Pride

1. A sense of one's own proper dignity or value; self-respect.
2. Pleasure or satisfaction taken in an achievement, possession, or association: parental pride.
3. Arrogant or disdainful conduct or treatment; haughtiness.
a. A cause or source of pleasure or satisfaction; the best of a group or class: These soldiers were their country's pride.
b. The most successful or thriving condition; prime: the pride of youth.
4. An excessively high opinion of oneself; conceit.
5. Mettle or spirit in horses.
6. A company of lions. See Synonyms at flock1.
7. A flamboyant or impressive group: a pride of acrobats.

hu·bris
n.
Overbearing pride or presumption; arrogance:

You'll note the first definition under pride describes the most commonly used/inferred meaning and is very much in line with the more nobler aspect of man I referred to.

Hubris refers more towards excessive pride akin to conceit and arrogance.
