I finally finished my first game. I had around 120k gold, 30k acres of land, a homely looking wife (married the first one when I should have held out for a hottie), rescued three relatives, found three lost cities, killed 9/9 famous pirates, found 9/9 buried treasures, avenged myself upon the villian, and all that happy stuff. Each time I divided up the treasure I moved up one in the difficulty but I found the top two settings to be way to difficult as even with all the extra gear which is supposed to speed you up and/or protect you at the highest level there was a 1-2 second delay on any sword fighting command. One the top two levels I routinely got my ass handed to me. |
, don't you know you aren't supposed to marry the first woman who you bang.

So I just started a new game. Signed up with the Brits to take me over to the Carribbean. So I figure I'd go to a Spanish port to get a letter of marque from them. Well, I find a settlement first and talk to their Mayor dude. He tells me they got this fancy new type of sugar cane growing and would I like to escort a shipping somewhere to a larger town. So I says sure thing matey, take this here sugar cane over to St.Kitts and I'll guarantee ya safe passage. And so sure enough, on the way there, we meet a pair of spanish privateers on nice new shiny sloops o' war. And they attack the Spanish transport loaded full of sugar cane. Well, me, I hold my word, so I attack the privateers and defend the sloop. But after I sink the nasty pirates, what happens? The captain of the sloop I was protecting yells "Stay clear, scurvy pirate" and gives me a broadside! Man, I ain't the one who was trying to feed the sugar cane to the fishes! That's not fair!

There are various types of escort missions you can perform that you could do for your benefit to earn fame, repair reputation and hurt it (by sinking any ship attacking escorted ship) or to earn promotions.
Escorting the new Governor--Successfully escort him to his destination and that port has its economy pumped-up one level. From Poor-Modest-Prosperous-Wealthy.
Delivering Peace/War proposal--Escort this ship to its destination and peace or war is declared with that nation.
Escorting special crops--If this ship makes it to port, prices in that crop go up.
Escorting Immigrants--I forget what this one does, will edit it later.
In order to complete these missions you will have to sink 2 enemy ships from a Nation it is at war. If at war with more than one nation, those two ships will be randomly determined. There are no repercussions to you if you allow the ship to be sunk.

You've got to be kidding! Man, why would you ever sink a ship! I have played through two games now, and I have only sunk one ship in them, and that was accidentally. It was a nice Royal Sloop sent out to get me, and I accidentally gave it one broadside too many.
When fighting the famous pirates, I try to not even fire a single shot, so I don't damage their ship too much. I just set a straight collision course, and jump onto the enemy ship with the cutlass aready to spill some blood.
Any way, sinking ships is silly. Instead, take them and sell them to the shipwright in the nearest town.

I don't think I've been at sea for over a couple years. I like to divide plunder often. The largest plunder I got in a single voyage was a little over 100k, for that reason, and I damn near lost it all when my fleet was all damaged (I had to frigates and a brigantine, and they were all at about 60% hull damage and like 75% sail damage - and not even the sailmaker and whatever is the name of the dude who fixes hulls could do anything about it), and on approaches to me home port, all of a sudden, out of nowhere came three spanish pirate hunters! I was running out of men, too, and as I was dueling the last captain, sure enough, I hit one person remaining, and only by some twist of luck avoided being hit by him and got back to port in one piece.

As stated in my previous post, I was well on my way to accomplishing that task (over 300k). I still have the save game if I can find that damned Inca City, as stated in my other Thread).
Setting the Foundation:
1) Defeat Montalban=100K
2) 4 Lost Cities=200K
3) 9 Famed Treasures=54K to 90K
4) 9 Famed Pirates= Depends on their ranking when defeated but the minimum is around 100K.
5) Sack as many towns as possible (Stay away from Poor ones--Wealthy or Prosperous only). Use Indians before you attack and escort new gov to pump up economy.
6) The Spanish Treasure Fleet= ??? (Random amounts, but you need to take them).
7) Sink as many ships as possible. Best targets: Other Treasure Ships, Military Payroll ships, Immigrants, & escorted ships (they're escorted for a reason).
8) Sell ships at top dollar (get as many upgrades as possible & makes sure you're a Duke of at least one Nation (2 preferably--More than 2, )
9) Plunder (Top dollar)--Spice & Luxuries are prefered, followed by Sugar and then Goods.
10) Wanted Criminals--Rewards range from 1K to 5K (I've never seen anyone worth over 5K)
11) Montalban (4 times before you sack his hideout), Raymondo (up to 16 times), & Mendoza (depends on the number of towns in any given Era).
Note: 8 & 9 go hand-in-hand.
