I use the longsword against generic people, the cutlass against famous pirates, pushy guards, evil bastards, and the kind, and the rapier against the fat revolutionaries, libertines, traitors, spies and such.

I've been playing it for 3 days straight now, and loving it.
My first character is 41 or 42 years old now with failing health, i'm still playing on the 2nd level.
I have completed all the quests, but haven't attained the highest rank yet with the Spanish and English.
I also married a beautiful French girl.
I had a lot of trouble with dancing in the beginning as well, but once you know the smaller sequences and have the dancing slippers it becomes much easier.
You can screw up the first move of the sequence a few times and the slippers will save you, and after that i generally know what the moves will be.
For sword fighting i always choose the rapier...don't know why really, never tried the other ones a lot...as long as i'm winning with the rapier i see no need to try out the others
Land battles annoy me though...the units move so slow and i couldn't find a way to speed them up...it wouldn't be so bad if you could have 2 or 3 units moving at the same time, but you have to wait for 1 unit to completely stop moving before you can move another
As a result i've avoided land battles and kept my crew small for the most part of the game, no more 200 and often less than 100 men...but now at the end of my career i want to try and install as many Dutch Burghers as possible so i have a crew of almost 400.
Btw, how low can you let your happiness drop before you're in serious trouble? I've always divided the plunder when my crew was unhappy for a few months and capturing a few ships with decent loot in a row didn't move it to content. Is there a "very unhappy" as well?\
I'm asking because my longest voyage was 70+ months, with <100 crew and about 280k in loot....the crew was unhappy but i wonder if i could've gone on for a few more months.

Dipping
To get this (see picture below), the Heart Monitor has to be HUGE, the dance has to be perfect or near-perfect (1 or 2 mistakes early, never late), and lots of flourishes (the spin). Note: At the higher difficulties, your response time to her moves & your mistakes is shortened (hit those keys quickly).
Unhappiness
If you possess the Concertina, the Cook & Quartermaster, you can go many months at unhappiness before they turn mutinous.

First -- I have the game!
Second -- sail away from the Port and do not get a Letter of Marque.
Third -- why do you need the Governor's daughter, there are others?
Fourth -- with all the ship upgrades, and adding crew, and keeping them alive, and gaining experience, you should be able to keep your original ship and crew to finish a time period.
Fifth -- there are neutral cities to dispose of the loot, and if not, use the Jesuit Missionary Settlements to make peace with a Governor of a nearby city.
Sixth -- You should be able to end with your original ship upgraded and with your crew, making you the most Nortorius Pirate that ever sailed the Caribbean.
Seventh -- you can dance with your peg leg, I guess, someday, if you see fit to do that.
Eight -- use the Follow View (Chase view) of your ship, and zoom in or out all the way, with the plus and minus key of the numeric keypad.
Ninth -- you can use a laptop in the game by changing the KeyMap.ini file where the Saved games are at -- in MyDocuments -- My Games -- (folder used to install the game), the rest of the game is installed in that same folder you installed it into.
10th -- it is a Great Game, Made Better, and is total Fun, buy it, play it, live it!
The Evil Baron Raymondo should give you nightmares, and sometimes the military escorts of the other ships are carrying most of the gold. And the Treasure Fleet is in the game -- when you find it.
And quietly if you want -- go Insane or Crazy, and be a Nortorius Pirate by gaining experience for your crew and yourself, as you sail the Caribbean Sea.
Yarr!

The only thing a Pirate needs is the GOLD -- all the GOLD!
Sid and Jeff are such kidders in this game, to make it ESRB Everyone, follow the game, get the results or strike out on ye own, it is up to you!
And some players have played it for -- years!
It has a living economy you can help or hinder in an area, or areas, or if you can -- the entire map of the Caribbean.
Host the sails, and go at it!

And the player can get the Indians to side with him and kick out the New World intruders. Easily a better game than Civilization. And have fun doing it also!
And leave the Jesuit Missionary Settlements there.
Kick them all out of the area!
YA! (rises arm to go off pirating!)
And the 3-D graphics are great!
Many ways to play this game, and much variety, afterall it is Sid Meier's first game!
And it still beats Civilization!
All that is needed is, of course, an Expansion Pack, and multi-player!
Maybe that could be done if you return your bounties to buy the game!

Am i the only one who likes the ship the Pinnacle? she lacks firepower and with triple hammocks can carry 90 men i think...... i scored one of these with four upgrades on it, sold me sloop and now am faster and thus avoid alot of enemy barrages.
I too have had issues with dancing...... i managed to get the large heart, and mini hearts 3/4 of the way around but i am not sure what i am doing wrong...
key is to press the right number as soon as it flashed correct???? b/c that is what i am doing, and its easy to geuss some of the pattersn... hitting key 8 or 2 is usually what screws me up.....i am not quick enough.
so far i haven't figured out how to look for lost treasure, but i have vanquished many of the the pirates....
and i sink ships all the time....some just explode......
do any of you pick up men in the water when they jump or fall overboard??? i do it all the time.....
as for morale, sigh, on the harder levels, its tough unless you get lucky in the beginning...b/c everything is so expensive....
for awhile i was cruising in the city sneaking up and conking the guards with the lanterns on the head, now they always turn around on me when i sneak up, and well i end up doing a few months in the slammer, unless i have the cash or the lock/picks to get out.....sneaking out is easy.
my biggest complaint, is the animation scenes repeat, as does EVERYTHING that you do in this game. The concept is fun, but its not worth what most of you paid for this game IMO of course.
a buddy burned me a copy to try, and while its cute, it doesn't take long to get the hang of what you need to do.....
Whats the best specialist? I like the gunner, thank god for him, but i dont' really understand what the sail or hull guys do? I mean i know what they do, but how its worked out while your at sea and they are doing repairs ect..... i need quantative numbers people....
nice to see some people are playing though......
