I'm curious, what "descripitive name" would you use for a language family that includes German, English, Dutch, Yiddish, and Swedish?

Finns are in deed Indo-European and their language is related to Hungarian though it is on the Finno-Ugrian branch (I believe that used to be called Turko-Algaic).

BTW the question was who pisses on the floor more not who's language is indoeuropean.

Finns are in the Finno-Ugric language tree. Which is generally considered seperate from Indo-European languages. It may or may not be considered related to the Altaic languages (also seperate from the Indo-European family). I've heard it both ways.

And yes, I realize that. Was making a smartass comment given the current conversation.

Yes. The peoples who speak Germanic languages are roughly those the Romans called germani.

It's even better in sane languages, that don't use a derivative of germanus to designate German, Germany, and Germans.

Right, it's always the same. Someone talks about Scandinavians including Finns. Then either Finn or Swede or someone who knows the definition clearly comes and says FInns aren't really Scandinavian, but often times are considered to be, but really they're not. But when we talk about Scandinavians, we can include Finns in it, unofficially and most of the times even officially, but when looking at the sharp picture, they really aren't Scandinavians.

But it's true.

So who drinks more, I think that's a question that is not simple to answer.. Swedes, Norwegians and especially Danes drink massively. We drink too, but the distinction is difficult to make, these people are very drunk too all the time in masses. Very difficult to say, so I don't say anything to that.

Yes, because 'germanic' isn't = 'german'.

the difference is more obvious in eg. German/Scandinavian; 'german' = deutsch/tysk, while germanic = germanisch/germansk.

Trying to write or speak in English without the use of a preponderance of words derived from or related to other Germanic languages such as Frisian, Dutch, Old Norse, and Anglo-Saxon is nigh on impossible.

Could someone tell me whats a "scandinavian language", I always thought scandinavia refers to a geographic and political entity, in wich Finland is part of.

And Ari perhaps knows the best but AFAIK Finnish is not related to indo-european at any level. We have always been weirdos
