as opposed to this maudlinly sentimental song (the lyrics dont do it justice, you have to hear the melody, preferably sung by a group of teenage Lubavitch chasid camp counselors), which gets almost NO air time

"The little bird is calling
He wishes to return
The little bird is wounded
He cannot cry but yearns
He's captured by the vultures
And is crying bitterly
Oh to see my nest again
Oh to be redeemed

The little bird of silver
So delicate and rare
Still chirps among the vultures
Outshining all that's there.

How long, how long it suffers
How long will it be
When will come the eagle
And set the little bird free

The little bird is Yisroel
The vultures are our foes
The painful wound is Galus
Which we all feel and know
The nest is Yerusholayim
Which we yearn to see once more
The eagle is Moshiach
Whom we are waiting for"

Nah. 'I Don't Love You' by the Dishrags. I have a cover by the Puta-Pons that kicks ass.

And Asher is clearly out of his element.

I like that song.

Dashboard Confessional (understandably) has a ton of pretty emotional songs.

The Brilliant Dance, after a breakup...
quote:
So this is odd,
the painful realization that all has gone wrong.
And nobody cares at all,
and nobody cares at all.

So you buried all your lover's clothes
and burned the letters lover wrote,
but it doesn't make it any better.
Does it make it any better?

And the plaster dented from your fist
in the hall where you had your first kiss
reminds you that the memories will fade.

So this is strange,
our sidestepping has come to be a brilliant dance
where nobody leads at all,
where nobody leads at all.

And the picture frames are facing down
and the ringing from this empty sound
is deafening and keeping you from sleep.
And breathing is a foreign task
and thinking's just too much to ask
and you're measuring your minutes by a clock that's blinking eights.

This is incredible.
Starving, insatiable,
yes, this is love for the first time.

Well you'd like to think that you were invincible.
Yeah, well weren't we all once before we felt loss for the first time?
Well this is the last time.
This is the last time.
This is the last time.

wrong answer. The 80's was the best decade for music. Specifically metal. With genres such as thrash (speed) and death metal coming to prominance.

Got spare money?

Once upon a time -
I thought that I'd go far -
Pictured myself -
Getting blowed in a company car -
But now those days are over -
And the well is dry -
I sit around getting high -
Contemplating suicide -
And now some people wonder -
What's the matter with me -
Why I've started wearing diapers -
At the age of 23 -
Because -
Tonight those days are over -
And the well is dry -
I'd go for the meat and potatoes -
But I ain't got the time -
So come on baby - spank my ass -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
Penetrate me with broken glass -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
Baby make it hurt - baby make it last -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
It's just flesh - and nothing else -
Let's face the facts -
My fate is sealed -
Leather straps tight around my flesh -
Down on my hands and knees -
Now I face the final curtain -
I guess I had to learn -
Every inch of flesh is hurting -
Feel my ass - it burns! -
So come on baby - stomp my face -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
Feces war in a sexual haze -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
Come on baby - spank my ass -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
Penetrate me with broken glass -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
Baby make it hurt - baby make it last -
C'mon - It's just flesh, just flesh -
Satan laughing spreads his wings -
It's just flesh, just flesh -
It's just flesh, just flesh -
It's just flesh - there's nothing else...

My favorite rap song (this oughta give the sensor a workout, ) :

Awwww yeah!
Heyyy, check it out..

DJ Quik is in the mother****in house! (repeat 8X)

[DJ Quik]
Check it out..
Now I be knockin *****es like it ain't ****
Cause I'ma playa mother****er named DJ Quik
Yo, maybe it's the way, I hold my ****
that makes all the girlies wanna ride my tip
But some of these *****es try to act unfair (why?)
Maybe its becuase my hair is longer than theirs
But I don't give a ****, no I don't care
Because I'm like Noah's Ark - my *****es come in pairs
You see I'm 5'11", my *** is size seven
and if a hooker's fine I can stretch you a nine
It goes deep (how deep?) All up in that ****
I'll **** a ***** dry cuz I don't know how to quit
I'm 19 (say what?) so I'm a young arse man
My eyes are brown and my skin is tan
So pull them cotton-arse panties right down to ya knees
if you wanna take part in a proper-arse skeez
I'm more than a playa (word?) I'm more like a pimp (yeah!)
I love black ***** but I sure won't simp
I got the *****es on my jock like an airplane wing
and only way for me to get 'em off I have to sing
I say, "Oooh hoe, don't jock me so,
never-ever-ever wanna let me go,
once I whip this **** on you!" Heyyy, check it out
I say, "Oooh hoe, don't call me no mo',
how in the **** can I let you know,
that I'm a mother****in troop!" (Aww yeah, worrrd 'em up!)
Now that oughta tell ya right then and there
that I'm a true mother****er so ya better beware
Cuz when we huggin and kissin, and ya wanna get mushy
Girl ya best be prepared to **** because I love black *****!

I can't help it cause I love black *****..
I got to have it, just like a rabbit - black *****..
Black *****.. what kind?
{*Quik scratches "Sweet, sweet, sweet.. sweet"*}

[DJ Quik]
Yeah.. and I'm takin
all the money from these funky hoes that I be breakin
If you say that there's another Quik then you're mistaken
I amm not a coward and you'll never see me shakin
Never breakin lots of money that I'm makin
If you double-cross me then I'll be your undertaker
I will never be-friend you because you are a steaker
Open up your mouth if you want some beefsteak-ah
If you suck it long enough you'll taste a milkshake-uh
Lyrics I am hummin, when they see me comin
Suckers they... aww ****, hold up man
{*needle drags across the record*}
This the wrong mother****in page and ****
Aww ****, I need to start on the..
Oh okay, here we go:
{*music kicks back in*}
Black *****! Always talkin bout it cuz I love it
Women get grown up just as soon as they let me rub it
And in a week's span, my homey Freak-Man
sinks into so much ***** we should call him Quik-sand
(Last hoe was done by the true mother****ers
from the P-E-N-T-H-O-U-S-E) Players Clique
Tweety's in the cold room, Freaky's in the studio room
I am in the livin room, and Hammer's in the bedroom
Freakin! (Or should I say skeezin?)
Call it livin large in 1990 becuase playin be the reason
So many freaks we have to forward the calls
And when the girlies hear the.. {*beeper goes off*}
.. they pause, and get hot (how come?)
I think they know what time it is
They should know that's how we handle our biz (gotta handle it)
They shouldn't trip and call playin a sin
because it's in and we're all black men so we love black *****!

And ya know that, because we show that!
Yeah..
Aww yeah!
Cuz DJ Quik is the king of the underground scene
Yeah

DJ Quik is in the mother****in house (say what?)
DJ Quik is in the mother****in house (say WHAT?)
and Shabby Doo is in the mother****in house (is that right?)
and Too E Caddy's in the mother****in house (aww yeah!)
and Playa Hamm is in the mother****in house (say what?)
and Donzelly's in the mother****in house (say WHAT?)
and Greedy Gregg is in the mother****in house, break it down!

Aww yeah.. DJ Quik is in here for the big 9-0!
along with the O.G.P.B.C. in the mother****in house baby
Yo, and we outta here, peace

Even a lot of the popular music of the early 80's was good. It only started to turn to **** after rap became popular.

You'll notice early 80's pop music is based off of rock rythyms. But then everything shifted to hip hop/rap and r&b rythyms . Not that I'm racist or anything, I just don't like that type of music. The early 80's were notable for many good european rock bands that had good success in the U.S. Duran Duran, Depech Mode, Pet Shop boys etc.

Sad but true.

I still play some of those songs too ( not Duran Duran, or the Pet shop boys though. ), but the thruth is, is that it's just not good music.
Even early Simple Minds is late 70'ties IIRC, and Ann Clarke cna hardly be called popular.

As decades recede in memory, the wheat is separated from the chaff, and we're more and more left with the golden kernels of music and forget the garbage.

I find songs with lyrics don't grab me emotionally as non-vocal music can. Music can express so much that mere words can't, and often it's best to be able to project one's own feelings on a piece rather than be a slave to the intent of the composer. Lyrics tend to interfere with that for me (especially since a large portion of lyrics, even in beautiful songs, are often hampered by the occasional clunker verse or line).

I think you are correct here.

How many peopel remember all the crappy songs from the 60's? Only people who lived during those times (old people). All I know of the 60's is the best R&B and Rock music that came out of that decade. Truelly great stuff. But I'm certain they had their share of stinkers.

this could be because most music was popular

It seems in the 80's music branched into many genres and sub genres. actually it started earlier than that. But it really became diverse.
