Biggest Science Fiction Disappointments! Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

1. The so-called Sci-Fi Channel
a. Does not show Dr. Who, Blake's 7, Space 1999, or a host of other classic shows.
b. Does show as many badly acted, cheap looking or otherwise unoriginal shows/movies as possible.
c. Cancels shows if they are good.
2. Wingcommander the movie. Could have been so much better.
3. I, Robot. What the **** does this have to do with Asimov's classics? Oh, yeah they both have robots.
4. Starship Troopers. See above.

If I, Robot is any indication, you better hope no one does a Foundation mini. Can you imagine that as an action comedy?

I don't know about action comedy, I always though that series was just crying out to be made into a musical.

I don't think that I, Robot was really all that bad. Sure, it was a little absurd at parts, but the main story was very similar to something Asimov might have written (if not actually identical).

As for Firefly, that is a disappointment but all reports suggest the movie is truly great. They're on a contract for three movies, so it's doubtful we'll see a new series any time soon. Still, any Firefly is good.

So would've it been better if the movie was called something else then? I can see how that might make a small difference but I gave up hoping the movie would be a straight adaptation of an Asimov story when I heard Will Smith was involved. In any case, I'm not convinced an adaptation would have worked that well.

At least the producers didn't pretend it was an adaptation. I think it said something like, 'Inspired by stories by Isaac Asimov'.

The Postman.

I think it is dispicable to change the whole message of a book, and then to do it with cheap acting to boot.

Starship Troopers.

Same as above.

There should just be a disclaimer for any of these types of movies, be it historic or sci-fi:

Yep... and if they didn't buy the freaking rights to the story! It was originally supposed to be a robot vs. man story and then they bought the rights to "I, Robot" and just sprinkled a bit of Asimov hear and there.

I like the "I, Robot" movie... but I haven't read the book "I, Robot" either, so I have no idea what the movie and the book has in common...

And so far, the only thing I've heard against "I, Robot" was the the choice of title, and I agree, if it doesn't have anything to do with the book, then pick another title...

Blaes Runner is better than the Phillip K. Dick original, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Then again, I've never been paticularly found of Phillip K. Dick (I was going to shorten it to his last name and realized how it was going to read ).

The new Battlestar Galactica is (going to be) great though

The biggest scifi disappointment is that there is so little of it lately (of decent quality). Enterprise S4 is alright so far, the FireFly movie looks promosing (if they ever stop postponing it and release the damn thing, that is ) and BSG rocks your socks off, but beyond that there's not much to get excited about.

The biggest disappointment of science fiction is that so many years later, it's still fiction. Where are the space rockets and giant robots we're supposed to have had since 1999?

When it comes to Sci-Fi I am annoyed that most of the aliens are humanoid. The chance that ANY intellegent beings out there resembles us is close to 0 (which is why all this "alien abduction" and "alien bodies at Roswell" stuff is a load of crap.

Actually, there are an explanation. Humans doesn't come from earth, they come from mars.

Saw Mission to Mars a couple of days ago, and was really dissapointed - they could easily have cut those two hours down to 15 mins.

Something dangerous looking happens - do the take cover ? no they just stare at it.
Their spaceship get punctured - do they isolate the area ? no, they loose almost all air.
and it continues throughout the film.
