You know a Mac Basher just might argue that their PC could blow this Mac out of the water (as Fez has done), but if you say so you are missing the whole point.

The whole point of Apple's strategy in releasing such a system is to make the Mac more affordable for those who say, "I want a Mac, but I just can't afford one" OR "I just can't justify the cost of buying one because I'm not so sure what I'm getting into." Believe me, I've heard this from PC users too many times to count.

You see, the idea is to help PC users try out the Macintosh to see wether they like it or not (if history has anything to say about this most will be pleased with their purchase), so that it will help them justify the cost of buying a more powerful Macintosh as their next system in the near future.

That's all their is to it. If you say your PC can beat this Mac to the punch then that's not a valid argument because this particular Mac is meant only to promote Apple's more powerful computers. There is no need to get all hyped up and start trolling over this. 'Nuff said.

You are the one repeating the same rhetoric over and over again. You follow Apple like a cult. The IMac is a piece of junk... and I can't wait to see what kind of hardware this $499 one has... ATI Radeon 7000? 128MB of ram?

No PC user would buy a piece of crap. I know the majority of PC users are probably wanting the Athlon 64. It is the most solid, best CPU on the market. Why anybody would want a more "powerful" Mac is beyond me when Mac's hardly have any software out on them compared to AMD/Intel based machines.

Can you still disprove me? PC Users are right when they opt out of spending any amount of money on a low quality IMac... and one for $499... well... PC Users still won't change their mind. You can use the same amount of money and get a way better PC Machine.

I think Berz nails it.

Many people could be attracted by Mac's simplicity, and may want to switch from PC to Macs. However they don't want to invest heavily into something they don't know.

500$ is a modest cost for a computer, and something the Mac-Curious could probably afford. I don't know if the rumor is true. But it looks like a sound commercial policy to me: expand your market by making a product that can be attractive to potential new customers, instead of focusing on the same niche, that only shrinks.

My point exactly and in your face, Fez (if you haven't blocked me yet)! Though I have this gut feeling that you still don't quite get my drift.

So, if this rumor is true, then keep up the good work, Apple; you are moving in the right direction!

But are you still a niche player then? This piece of pricing tactics just undermines the differentiation strategy of Apple.

But you must realize that if Apple doesn't start thinking "outside the box" they might be out of the PC business within a few years.

In my face? With the 2% and declining market share Apple holds? The only thing that is in your face is the AMD Athlon 64, and the fact it can be afforded for mid-range machines.

You know, if you just ignored it when people call you Fez instead of making remarks about it then this will eventually go away naturally. Cuz you know what, it's hilarious when you get all fired up over it and it just makes people want to tease you about it even more.

This theory fails miserably, though, if you look at the real world. Many, maybe even most eductational computers (at least through high school) are Macs. Few or no people go through school without exposure to Macs. Most hate them, and we don't see people rushing to buy a Mac as soon as they leave school.

A prophecied leader, yet to come, that will lead a failed full-scale invasion of Israel.

But that's whole another thread.
