I remember that, or at least something similar.

One player plays the Nazis and the rest play various "factions" of Jews. The Jews run around various places on the board to collect items. A piece can attempt to flee when a set of essential items has been collected. The Nazi guy move about to try to catch the Jews.

There are also various cards players can collect, and there's this Do or Die thing.

Caesar at Alesia - I just loved this cover too. It was a pretty neat game too. As Romans, you get to decide where you can place your forts trying to containing the city and at same time prevent reinforcing Gauls to open up a hole in your lines so their leader stuck in Alesia could flee. You could follow the orginial sites Caesar built them or not.

Those forts were so strong defensive that casualties that can result from an attack upon one can be so insane considering fort's own defensive artillery and lethal earthworks along with your own archers and slingers.

As the Gaul player you get to see how the Roman player plan his troops and forts and you can decide wherever on the board you want to strike from keeping the Roman player guessing.

We had a gaming club where I grew up - really cool. I have been playing AH and SPI games since the early 70`s. At one time I had over 300 of these games.

We played The Campaign for North Africa with 10 gamers

We played War in Europe with 15 players

I started with:
- Quadrigames: Blue&Grey
- Quadrigames: forgot_the_name (NATO vs Warsaw Pact in hypothetical 1970 WW3)

Most played:
- War&Peace
- ASL (all expansions)

Enjoyed also:
- WorldWar II (European theater of operation)
- WorldWar II (Pacific theater of operation)
- Patton's 3rd Army

I also wanted to buy/play the whole Europa (GDW) serie, but bought only 2 of them: War in the Desert and... the one about Winter War... forget the exact name. My finances then forbad me to buy more. Very interresting game mechanics, but I didn't play them that much.

For some reason, we never bought Panzer Leader. PanzerBlitz was awesome.

I liked the three foldout maps which could be assembled in any number of ways as the roads/rivers/terrain matched up no matter how you put the edges together.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

This graphic represents all three boards put together. If you look closely at the rivers and the roads you could move the top 1/3 of this picture to the bottom of the map and the terrain lines up.

It provided some nice variety for different scenarios. Probably my favorite scenario was a German Fighting Withdraw in 1944 forget the location, but it was probably Poland. The scenario called for the maps to be assembled short-end to short-end (imagine seperating the 1/3's of the attached pic and putting the short ends together - you will see the road hexes line up again).

The objective, as the Germans, was to preserve your forces while inflicting damage on the Russians. The Russians have tons of T-34s and T-34/85s. The Germans have self propelled guns like the Wespe and the Hummel. You park those suckers on a mountain top 10-20 hexes back and when you sight the Russians - ya light 'em up. Retreat when they get to close and setup again in another location with a good field of fire. The Germans end up retreating the whole length of those three boards in the scenario.

A great scenario and a very innovative game.

SPI was more hardcore. Unlike Avalon Hill, SPI games werent sold in retail stores, IIRC. You bought them mail order or you subscribed to their military history mag, which included a game in each issue. Which meant you had to be pretty hard core even to have found out about them. And this was before the net, so it wasnt like you could find out about them from websites or whatever (You could buy their games at their HQ in NYC, however)

SPI was cool because they would cover battles and conflicts that we less mainstream. Some very unique situations and historical battles were covered by SPI.

They were under pressure to design a new game for each issue. I can't imagine the rush to deadline that must have been.
