i got started on Avalon Hill, then graduated to SPI. My high school was located less than 2 miles from the SPI HQ in NYC, and this was in the '70s, when SPI was in top form. I still have a few games in a box in the basement. About a year ago i dug up the 1914 (AH), Afrika Corps (AH) and Sinai (SPI). All remain interesting - Afrika Corps is a more elegant design - the Dunnigan designs are interesting too, of course.

I never played those games, but I did play a sci-fi game by Avalon Hill based on Frank Herbert's novel "Dune" that I really liked.

I'm slowly rebuilding my collection thanks to the wonder that is ebay. Recent purchases include Squad Leader and the two expansions and Third Reich.

Thinking about buying the new version of SPI's Empires of the Middle ages by Decision Games. $100 plus postage from the US though. Still thinking.

Decision seem to have picked up the rights to a lot of the old SPI games.

Got spare money?

I loved playing the Third Reich. One game was good for a couple months during the summer break.

Also played Squad Leader but didn't spend as much time playing it.

my games with my brother were usually lmited to a weekend, i think nearly all our games were completed by playing fiday night, al lday saturday and nearly all sunday.

the long time to complete is usually what puts others off learning them

I have two very old copies of third reich (1st edtion), and one much newer one (the avalanche one) (not sure if any of them are advanced third reich)

I also have the majority of ASL modules (Actually, only half), all the SL modules, and a bunch of other games

I would really like ones like Africa Korpsa nd DDay

I really love Civ the board game also (once had a record that was something like 45 wins 10 losses, currently it is like 46 and 19)

Found more than two or three never really worked because of varing abilities. Also the France/USA player can get bored and Italy depends too much on Germany. Most of our multi player ended up in fights over the rules.

Other favourites include Vietnam (campaign game started about 15 years ago - we generally manage a couple of turns each summer), Atlantic Wall and Freedom in the Galaxy.

i own the 4th edition rules of third reich.

Advanced third reich was also done by avalon hill.

The avalanche series of games were new ones created by the original designer of Avalon hills Third reich. He obviously didnt like the Advancd Third Reich editions so made his own.

I must not have advanced third reich

I played the avalanch version once recently (a year ago) with 4 players

it was a bit weird though because the war didn't really start, and I (as Britain and France) didn't want to spend the money to declare it

so germany and italy picked up some small nations (and russia attacked turkey)

but my frenids are not really that intense, they are more axis and allies players for th emost part (although they would sort of like a game of similiar depth where everyone starts in nearly equal footing and than can pick sides and do diplomacy and the like) (they liked diplomacy, but I think what they would like most is diplomacy but with axis and allies combat)

Third Reich, Third Reich Advanced, ETO and PTO both by SPI, Panzerblitz, Panzer Leader, Arab Israeli Wars, Turning Point Stalingrad....

I have some others but can't remember. I grew up the only person I knew who played these games. All my friends were much into sports or other activities to want to play complex games like these with me. $%^& they even thought that Risk was way too complicated!

Oh well, maybe when I'm an old fogey in some nursing home somewhere someone will want to play some wargames with me.

Kingmaker used to be fun with enough people.

I also used to play Gettysburg, 1776, War and Peace, Waterloo, Caesar and a bunch of others. My brother actually still owns them all, but they have disappeared into his attic.

Oh, I miss those days. I have about 100 SPI games and many Avalon Hill titles: Third Reich, Panzerblitz, Arab Israeli Wars, Stalingrad, Squad Leader, even Tactics II.

I haven't played any since high school No players, no time.

I found a demo for a Third Reich PC game (link). It's an old (one might even say abandoned ) DOS game, but looks interesting for those of us that can't find human opponents.
