I've done some research and it seems as if saved games of size greater than 200 blocks are guaranteed to cause trouble.
Here is a laundry list of things that you can do to cut down on the size of the files as well as preventing disc read errors to occur during gameplay. This is taken from Bethesda's support:
- Find a place to rest. If in a town, walk just outside of the town.
- Rest for three days straight.
- Once you have rested for three days, make a new saved game. Don't save over a previous game, make a new saved game.
- Once the game is saved, immediately load the game that was just saved.
This will help to clean up any items that have been left laying around, as well as reset any objects that have been moved in the game. The combination of these two items will help reduce the amount of memory needed to load up an area, as well as minimize the size of the save game files. This, in combination with the steps below, will help to prevent most problems from occurring.
Try and save on a new save game file every few hours of play. Most people find that saving their progress to a new saved game once they are done playing for the day helps to prevent problems from appearing.
Don't leave corpses laying around. If you kill something, dispose of the corpse. If the body has items you don't want, put them into a container. Items left in a container will disappear faster than if they are lying on the ground.
Don't move items that don't need to be moved. While it may be a neat trick to play on an NPC, rearranging their house actually takes up more of the Xbox's memory and increases the size of the save game file.
If you notice your inventory becoming rather full, take a moment to go through it. If there are any items that you find you don't need, either sell them or put them into a container.

Good info bfg9000
Still those last two paragraphs are a little depressing, they're one of the most fun things about Morrowind for me I'll check my save game file sizes, i didn't know about that.

For me, the biggest pain is not leaving the corpses around. It is hard enough to manage my inventory to keep from getting too heavy. Now, every time I kill something, I'm supposed to carry around all the junk it owned until I can find a crate to dispose of it?!
I am doing this and still my saved game sizes are not getting smaller. They are at 266 blocks now.. File sizes were fine until I switched to GOTY.. |
Yes i'm beginning to wonder about GOTY as well.......sadly i got rid of my origonal Morrowind game so i'm stuck now. Still i'm daggerfalling until the next Elderscrolls(or until they maybe fix GOTY?)
Actualy ref the corpses lying around, i think you can press the white button to get rid of the corpse AND all its equipement?(not 100% on this - i'll have to test it out). So you should be able to avoid carrying all the stuff, but if you can do that you would loose it all forever.

What is your character's armor configuration?
I have a level 50 character who can pretty much choose from anything that is out there. He is wearing:
Adamantium Helm
Glass Pauldrons
Her Hand's Gauntlets
Cuirass of the Savior's Hide
Glass Greaves
Boots of Blinding Speed
Ebony Shield
Helm is enchanted w/Fortify Light Armor 1-19 constant effect..
Shield is enchanted w/Fortify Strength 1-59 constant effect...
(Ebony shields have an incredible 150 enchantment points!)
Armor rating = 219.
Also equipped regularly:
Exq. shirt - ench. Fortify Luck 1-23 constant
Exq. pants - ench Fortify Agility 1-16 constant.
Trebonius' Necromancer amulet
Royal Signet Ring
One of my other various constant effect rings
No robe - I dont like the way the character looks with a robe on!

My character is a lv49 Nord.
Either i wear full dark brotherhood armour using a dwermer shortsword, for theif type missions. I cant get involved in tough fights like this, so will run away if i get to many people/creatures after me.
Magical item is a shadow amulet(chamaleon 80%).
Or my main combat setup is:
Dragonscale cuirass and helmet(they just look cool)
Imperial chain pauldrons
Leather Boots
Imperial templar greaves
Dwermer gauntlets
Steel battle axe(two handed)/ magical lightning damage.
or Dwermer shield + Black saints short sword.
magic item is an ebony right guantlet of levitation.
