Hey all, I'm currently having problems connecting to open wireless networks with my notebook, might be one of windows recent patches.

Windows XP service pack 1.
Patched to Feb 13, 2004

Observed behavior that's different prior to the Feb 13 patches:

1. Must click on a checkbox about this is an unsecured network, blah blah blah.

2. When the checkbox is clicked and connect occurs, wireless icon goes to un-adviable for a few seconds then goes to "one or more wireless networks are adviable"

----

Prior to Feb 13 patches wireless worked properly.

(In the library on one of their machines)

I do, see the top of page 4 post. I tried every trick offline I could do, the same problem still exists.

One additional symptom was that the wireless icon at home where two of my nieghbors have secure wireless networks it also shows as connected when it's not. (I don't know which ones, they are barely in range; I'm in a cul de sac.)

If someone knows which of these twenty something patches number I need to uninstall, it might help.

The other choice would be replace me. I can't very well play Civ III from either work or the library.

Ever tried to copy the saves to play at home, then copy them to send from other places? This should be easy enough for you, and not much slower for us anyway.

I know nothing about wireless LAN, sorry.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

My notebook has no floopy drive. Just a CD/DVD burner.
No Burner at work.

Oh and I was never able on that notebook to get a flash memory card to work. (That card works on every other machine I've tried.)

I also work at a place where we're absolutely not allowed to bring personal notebook computers in to work. In fact, it's technically against the rules to bring camara equipped cell phones in. At least they don't allow regular camaras either unlike the dilbert cartoon.

Yeah, get inventive. Maybe you can fix it. Ingenuity. Try for a few and then we can replace the French player.

Thats right be a bit inventive, show some spirit. Just get one of those USB keyring thingys, download the save to it from a mate's PC. Slap, it in the notebook, play, then back to the mates place. (or the office). Or do what us other nerds do in such a situation and use dial-up...

As long as you still have the civ cd. And don't fill the new company notebook full of viruses and spyware trying to load a cracked version, you will be in front of me in my last dilema....

Besides, there is some serious arse whooping to do as we enter the lair of the facist beast.

Here's the current status:

Found where the install package for SP2 was hidden on my notebook. Installed it. (Took quite a while)

Noticed that it was no longer saying I was connected to secure networks I wasn't.

Norton's Anti Virus sugested that I turn off SP2's redundanat security, I let it do so.

It immedately found other updates that had previously downloaded onto my notebook. Installed them.

Out of time that evening, just checked and saw it remembered who my favorite open wireless provider is and in addition the GUI for it is new + it's clicked to auto connect to them would I come within range while not auto connecting to anyone else. (That would be the correct settings for me)

My notebook is in my car; it does need a few more patches because it hadn't previously downloaded the driver fix for SP2 that allow it to be turned off without removing the batery , but hopefully it will connect this evening.

Put an end to popups!

Here's the new status:

1. I'm typing this on my notebook using the wireless network.
2. The windows update of 4 Critical SP2 patches, 2 optional software, and 2 hardware patches successfully installed.
3. The BIOS update successfully downloaded.

BUT

1. The Bios update is a no battery mode

AND

While Civ III will run after a fanshion in SP2 without the Bios update it hangs on combat.

So my other PBEM game was sent on successfully, but Civ III hung when my bomber was auto-intercepted by a fighter.

Hopefully the Bios update is all I need.

Update:

After getting home last night and plugging in the notebook to electric power, the Bios upgraded just fine.

Opened up Civ III : Conquests, loaded the save.

Hey Guys, some bad news.

That bios upgrade I installed so that I could play Conquests itself without crashing on combat introduced a new bug with wireless network. Specifically, it can't see any wireless networks, even at point blank range.

Update, web searching with google found that the Bios upgrade was leaving the wireless device itself OFF. Hum, that's one of the things windows was thinking, except that as a notebook there's no external on/off switch. Yeah, I didn't notice that the wireless light was off at the time, but replaying my memories shows that it was off.

The same message says to hold down a key combination during startup to turn on the wireless. I'll try that. In the mean time I've posted to that forum the timeline of events.
