quote: There is a tiny Chinese independant music scene (including punk) centered mainly in Beijing. It seems to be very small, of the hundreds (> 1,000?) young Chinese I've worked with, I've met probably less than ten interested in any kind of "alternative" music. Finding a young person into jazz or R&B is about as far out as you'll find. |
The more I hear about modern Japan and China, the more SKorea sounds like some kind of bizarrely halfway point. SKorea is bad, but at least in Seoul, not anywhere near as bad as you're describing. Lots of people here like mainstream "alternative" such as Nirvana etc. etc. etc. which is certainly a wonderful change of pace from the pop, techno-pop, and pop-rap.
quote: Yeah, an oft-noticed difference. And a lucky one, too! There's less friction if foreign guys chase the ugly local chicks (and a few ugly local guys) instead of competing for the desirable ones. |
Yeah, this is definately true. Asians tends to like asians with more "western" features (round eyes etc. etc.), asians with more "asian" features are often surprised how many westerners end up hitting on them when they go to abroad.
