Vic Wertz was the hitter and Wes Westrum (later to manage the NY Mets) was the catcher behind the plate.
Pitcher at the time is a tough one.

Looking at The Baseball Almanac online... I have come to the conclusion that it was either Don Liddle or Marv Grissom on the mound. It couldn't have been Maglie because he rcorded no outs in the eighth inning.
Liddle got 1 out and Grissom got the other 2 in that eighth inning. Since the runners did tag up, but not score... there was definately less than 2 out..... so either Liddle pitched and Wertz's shot was the first out and then Liddle came out for Grissom to get the next 2 outs.... or there was 1 out already and Grissom came on to replace Liddle and Wertz's shot was the second out.
hard to tell. That is the best I can do for now just looking at the BBA.
