I don't think so. I don't know how can one deepen alleged sentiment if it acts right. I think that breaking promises and falsifying history can cause that, not the other way round.

It's hard to keep the people happy (much less people in other countries happy) when there is nothing to buy in the store because most of the factories have been converted to military production. The people also want beds, food, nice clothes, and TV sets.

The US wasn't going to invade the USSR first of all because we don't like big wars (we like to pick on little guys like Iraq ) and the Soviets had more then enough nukes to deter a war with or without SDI. I'm confident that if the USSR cut its military spending and increased production of consumer goods for its people then there would still be a USSR today. Unfortunately, (or fortunately depending upon your point of view) the Soviet political leadership was to ideologically commited to the arms race so they didn't give up until it was to late to save the USSR.

I agree with everything above, except 'not invading the USSR' part. Without Reigan and intensification of Cold war under his rule, USSR could survive as well. You were bluffing. Your bluff was successful, and old farts from politburo considerably increased military spending.

I'm not sure it was a bluff about the arms race but the US was never going to invade the USSR; your nukes ruled that out. You have/had more then enough to over well any SDI.

Instead Reagan correctly figured out that Soviet pride would not allow them to back down from a disastorous arms race. The result was the previously mentioned 40% of GDP the Soviets were spending in order to keep up with the Americans followed closely by economic collapse. Outputs of nonmilitary goods like farm tractors went down and down which quickly resulted in ever falling agricultural output. The US had more then enough extra grain and Reagan was willing to allow the sales... as long as the Soviets paid in hard currency.

Of course the Soviets didn't have hard currency (darn commie dead beat ) so they asked if the US would be so kind as to arrange loans for them. This of course give the west more and more leverage over the Soviets. At that point it becomes a death spiral and the sad fact is it could have all been avoided if the USSR had just given up the arms race. There's no point in ruining a country trying to play games you can't win.

Edit: Yeah, Reagan certainly upped the ante and did everything he could to goad the Soviet leadership along into the arms race but in the end it was the Soviets themselves who jumped off that economic cliff.

Now seriously - what is the general sentiment towards Baltic Independence in Russia? We here are starting to reap the fruits, and basically starting to feel good about ourselves. There is a lot of public discussion, 15th anniversary and all, about our relations with Russia, but there is not much reporting about how people in Russia generally feel about it - or you just don't care?

A degree of healthy scepticism is very adviseable in our relations with Russia, bearing in mind our recent history, but "russophobes with strong anti-Russian policies" is nonsense. What makes you think that? And be specific.

Oh sure, let's see:
about 500 000 Russian speakers in Latvia who doesn't have citezenship and can't vote (people who were born there can't vote, because they have Russian origins, while at the same time foreigners from EU can vote if they've spend 3 month there); not to mention such little and unimportant things as capability to get education on their native languge, US belowed Albania has more rights for minorities than Baltic states have (joking, almost joking) What else? Monuments dedicated to SS freaks; kindregardens named after SS "heroes"; SS veterans marching through streets of Tallin and Riga waving their f*cking nazi flags; anti-fascist veterans being thrown into jails; refusal of Lithuanian and Estonian presidents to visit celebrations dedicated to 60th aniversary of victory over nazism, Latvian president who said she will come but just to say there how much a f*ckers Soviets were, here whole speech was a clear insult to Russia. In place of Putin I would break any diplomatic relations with Latvia after words she said - "Vobla na gazetke, itd, itd" ****ing *****.
So yeah, those three countries are Russia's best friends and surelly aren't russophobes.

They are not precluded from getting citizenship; there are clear rules on how to get it, and if they only bothered to learn the language of the country THEY WERE BORN IN, they would get it. So, that's not an argument. Next:

WTF, you mean there aren't russian language schools in Latvia and Estonia? It's simply not TRUE, since there ARE.

quote:

Latvian and Estonian SS were exclusively combat formations; they also were officialy declared (iirc at Nuremberg, but I may be wrong on the venue) NOT part of the "criminal organisation", and were if not a natural then at least to some extent understandable response of the population to illegal occupation by USSR.

quote:
anti-fascist veterans being thrown into jails;

Source? Reason for imprisonment?

quote:
refusal of Lithuanian and Estonian presidents to visit celebrations dedicated to 60th aniversary of victory over nazism,

Well with your Duma discussing the merits of Molotov-Ribbentropp pact what the hell do you expect? Our president would be crucified at home by the victims and the relatives of victims of Soviet repressions.

quote:
Latvian president who said she will come but just to say there how much a f*ckers Soviets were, here whole speech was a clear insult to Russia.

And you mean the soviets WEREN'T? Get a clue.

quote:

That's why you'll never get to run anything important .

quote:
