Game of the Month - III Edition Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Hey all! I've got great pleasure to introduce you all a III Edition Game of the Month. February is first in III Edition, so now you can start play with us! It's time to play in modern ages, you will command German nation and your goals are.. Check it here! Good luck!

You can see how global ranking looks after two editions. It would be very nice to see other nations in that ranking after III Edition.

Best regards,
sezoN

sezoN,

This looks like fun. I downloaded the game... but how do you open an RAR file ? Also, I am confused about some rules ... for example, do you really play in multiplayer mode ?

.rar is a compacted format (like .zip) - very popular in europe - you can open it using WinRar - a utility very similar to WinZip - which is freely (as shareware) available on the Web - just do a quick search for winrar (or winarj - another similar utility which deals with .arj as well as .rar & .zip)

Tired of ads?

Thank you, Stu
I downloaded Winrar and it worked

Perhaps I shall rehome a few caravans in memoriam XinYu and SlowThinker

Helper programs, black-clicking and other tricks don't seem to be forbidden either... but I won't go that far

I am not sure I understand your question.
AFAIK you can post any save (max size = 500 000 bytes) as attached file.

La Fayette,

If I may...I believe Grigor was being overly indirect and that a likely restatement from him might be...
"La Fayette, will you please repost the "unzipped" opening here as a .sav.?. Thanks."

Assumes this is a language/misunderstanding problem....

Peaster and La Fayette, of course Scouse Gits has right, *.rar is similar to *.zip and it's very popular in europe. For others who's can't open it. Here it's oficial site of WinRar program. currenty in 3.42 release. - http://www.rarlab.com/

Rehoming isn't forbiden and black-clicking either but that second can really spoil your fun.

By the way, for what you want GotM in simple *.sav mode? Only in *.net file it's useful. So better download it from original address or attach here full *.rar file.

Peaster but why multiplayer mode is confuse for you?

sezoN,

I got winrar and have opened the start.net file, so I guess I am ready to play. But I am surprised that we are supposed to play a single-player game in multiplayer mode.... (why do it that way?). Also,

** I guess we need to save the game when we defeat the Mongols, or achieve any other goal, to prove when we did it?

** I looked at the rules.txt file. Hope that is OK.

** We want the Americans to have a lot of cities at THE END of the game, right?

I am going to try to zip the necessary files and post them here [fingers crossed]. You need MGE to play, and must open the start.net file in MP mode.

I know that you have it but someone else maybe don't. What about MP mode, so it is easier to check final scores, especially when some of goals are depends on number of cities ect. ect. And it's our standard, some kind of our GotM tradition.

I've down loaded the save posted by LF, but having read the rules, I now suspect that is not sufficient. Is there a dedicated rules.txt file that we need to use?

The rules say "changing the rules.txt file is strictly forbidden" so if there is no dedicated rules.txt, I assume we have to use the version that shipped with the game. (The version I usually play with changes the name of the English leader and the names and order of the English cities.)

I also have a small change in my units.gif - I assume this is OK since it doesn't affect game play. Or is there a dedicated units.gif?

Get a bigger avatar today!

I downloaded the .rar extractor, so I can answer my own question (at least partly)

There is a dedicated rules.txt and a units.bmp (I thought units was a gif file, but I'm not using my Civ computer at the moment, so maybe my memory is at fault). There is also a .net file. I assume this is the equivalent of the .sav file and will load into MPE in the same way.

I haven't looked at the rules.txt file for any differemces. sezoN said that it is OK to do this, so perhaps anyone who has looked at it will tell us the differences - or perhaps it is simply the original version in order to ensure that we all use it.

You will need 3 files: start.net, units.bmp, and rules.txt. The units and rules files are slightly different from standard... you move 2x on roads, etc. These files are all part of sezoN's rar file and the zip file above [I hope]. There is a readme file, but that info is also online at sezoN's site, civ.org.pl.

I think sezoN said we should not use LaFayette's .sav file. To use the .net file, you must have MGE and follow his directions [ IIRC you 1) start an MP game, 2) select the Internet option, 3) Load a saved MP game (namely start.net) and then select the Germans.]

Now, could you explain the part about the spaceship?

OK, I have unzipped the file, and got the various folders mentioned. Unfortunately, the start.net file does not show up as a game option in MP (or SP for that matter). I think this is a Mac problem. Peaster, do you have any suggestions? Perhaps an unzipped version of thestart.net might work for me.

Suggestions welcome.

Grigor - When you open the .rar, it will create a few folders for you (I assume the same happens on a MAC).
Make sure you know where the 3 main files are. IIRC they are in a "February '05" folder.

Actually, I also had trouble finding start.net for a while, but then suddenly there it was. Maybe restarting civ2 helped (not sure).

If you are using my .zip file, it may be my mistake. I haven't done a lot of zipping/posting. But in that case, be sure the 3 files are in the same folder (not the same one as your other civ2 files).

Just in case ...

MGE defaults to looking for a .sav file when you load a game, but you can change this to looking for a .net game.

(Sorry if this is stating the obvious.)

Have great fun while playing it's most important thing! Score is addition also nice but only addition to fun. If you havn't played much in modern age, so now you have great opportunity to do it and compare your score with polish civ friends.

This game is fun!
I very much enjoy the concept of multi-objectives (heartbreaking choices: which one do I take first? ).
... and waging war in modern times with stronger units added is a real change from early conquest.

Shall we start a spoiler thread or what?

LF, this seems right up your alley! It would be very enjoyable to look at your play in a spoiler thread.

As a MAC user, I am effectively shut out of this interesting scenario. However, I was able to open your save, so I have looked at the starting position.

With so many options, how does one begin to formulate a reasonable (and, of course, elegant) strategy?

Perhaps we should consider some type of modern units challenge game here at Apolyton, perhaps with objectives, but certainly in a more generally loadable format.

I really tried for about 50 turns, but my inexperience with modern units, governments, etc have put the Germans in a hopeless position. I probably won't post a result, but will replay the game and read the discussions to learn for next time.
