As if dress codes in school aren't bad enough, there could soon be a statewide dress code in effect for Virginia:

The Virginia House of Delegates has tentatively approved a bill to crack down on people who wear low-riding pants.

Freshman Norfolk Delegate Algie Howell Jr. introduced the bill at the urging of constituents who are offended by the exposed underwear.

Howell said, "That's why they're called undergarments. They're supposed to be worn under something else."

Delegates approved a measure that would allow police to assess a $50 fine on anyone who exposes their below-waist underpants in a "lewd or indecent manner."

While I would disagree in all other freedom of expression cases, in this ONE CASE, I agree with the young legislator completely....exposed underwear makes me mad.

Actually, yes. However, I recall running across an article about how, by order of the government, a youth Nudist camp was required to have the parents of the youth present (and presumably nude) at all times.

In response to the OP, I live in Virginia. And this is exactly the sort of thing that I could see happening. For most Virginians (read: southern virginians), the crisis of the modern era is the decline on traditional values, and yes, one way to combat that is to make low-riding illegal.

Comparing a stupid law like this to a regime which tortured people for having movie, murdered people in ghastly ways, mandated religious attendance, and had the official policy that people should do nothing other then serve the state and pray is an insult to the people who suffered under the Taliban regime.

Well I live in Virginia, and this doesn't surprise me at all. I have long called this state the Communistwealth. I think it's a stupid law though, and I'll write my state representative in opposition of this law.
