also this business of the Zerg, as broods of mass creatures, attracted to Psi waves, and manipulated by the confederacy, and possibly the hinted at creation of hybrid creatures with them, sounds rather like SMAC. SMAC came later, did it not? Is this theme based on preexisting scifi, like Dune?

whats the setting for TA? I mean Im already slumming it to play sci fi games, at least they either have a strong sci fi gameplay element like MOO2 or a strong plot like Starcraft (or both, like SMAC) Im not real interested in a vaguely contemporary but not realistic or historical setting. A game like that would need STELLAR gameplay to offset.

I'm having a bit of a technical problem with Starcraft. When I put it into my DVD or CD Drive, it either takes around ten minutes to load, or doesn't at all. And then when I try to click it, nothing happens, but it appears as if it's loading something for a few seconds, and then stops. It's a new CD, so no scratches either. I don't have any viruses. Any help?

The scenarios are all the same. You must first withstand the initial assault, then keep building more and more until you overwhelm the other side.

"Civil wars" are worse because you don't even have the "paper, rock, and scissors" effect there. Simple, mind-numbing attrition.

I like the broadly different play styles in starcraft, which no other game does as well. (Warcraft 3 tried, but is too hero focused)

I mean you look at a lot of games, like AoE. There is rock paper scissors there, but it is the same rock paper scissors for every race (basically), with Starcraft it is very different.

yah, well AoE of course didnt have races, but Civs, which were differentiated, but subtly(restrains self from mentioning historical accuracy). I suppose the high differentiation of SC helps make multiplayer interesting.

OTOH if UR is right, and the scens arent going to get more different than they have been so far, Id have to say the AOE SP campaigns are superior(as far as varied gameplay, that is - SC of course has more elaborate "continuity" material - in AOE you want more "Continuity" you go read a book or see a movie about the period). and yes, Im talking AOE, not AOK.

And some of the ingame response voices. But in one of the other films theres a confederate battle flag on a space ship, and then we get New Gettysburg (misspelled in one place). So this is based on an alternative history in which the South won the American Civil War (with the battle of Gettysburg as the point of departure? why else name a base after a Yankee town?) And the CSA goes on to found the earth based interstellar empire (I presume at some point we will learn why the HQ is Talonis, and not Earth)

No it's not. Not at all. Read the backstory - Earth is thousands of light-years away, and the humans are the descendents of the people on a convict ship that was sent far, far away to create a colony.

The races are based on Warhammer 40k - Terrans are Space Marines, Protoss are Eldar, Zerg are Tyranids.

lol, perhaps ... but I loved playing the protoss. Mind you, I sucked *totally* compared to serious players, but I could generally (in MP) beat an average player who didn't spend 40 hours a week playing... (this came out while I was in college, so a lot of people around me did spend that long )

But as Protoss, especially after playing the Protoss missions, I could survive for a LONG time, assuming I built a few units very early on and didn't get super-rushed. I mean, Protoss shields and repair meant that I could pretty much survive anything later in the game - I might not win, in fact against a very good player never would, but whereas as Zerg I'd either win or lose within an hour or so, as Terran, lose within 1.5 hours, as Protoss I once played a 6 hour game ... 3 player game, I survived to 2nd place sort of - never finished actually - I just bounced around from crystal patch to crystal patch, built a ton of shields in appropriate places, until I used up the patch; scouted for another, and moved on. It was admittedly a huge map, not sure what size but big enough... but it took nearly an hour for each base to fall, especially the ones below the rim where all I had to do was keep the terran tanks from burrowing in and nuking me. It was great fun ... always on the move

I "acquired" it by PURCHASE, by walking into my local EB (Electronics Boutique), taking the CD Rom to the sales clerk, and handing over 5 GENUINE USA dollars - IE Greenbacks - IE Legal Tender - IE the almighty dollar. IE the currency of G-ds own country, G-d Bless the USA. Said CD ROM came in a case, and had NO, repeat NO, manual attached. As is the case with about 90% of the used games for sale at the local EB. Ergo I lack a manual.

No - Zerglings look exactly like the little basic Tyranids, whatever you call them. And the big ones are basically hydralisks. Hell, I can never remember the name Tyranid, and just call 'em zerg.
