From biggest to smallest:

T series = performance/portability
X series = extreme portability

T series is where it's at, IMO. T43 are the ultimate laptops.

But pricey.

Yeah, Mac stores in malls are good for this. They'll let you play with the things for hours if you wanted to.

The nearest store here that has Apple products, aside from iPods, is CompUSA about 15 minutes away. I was a bit irritated when I learned the Best Buy 2 minutes from my house doesn't carry anything Mac at all.

When the computer maker has 2% of the marketshare, that's not unexpected.

Looks like getting a DVD drive in the G series is a 100$ + option..surely I must be mistaken?

Got spare money?

quote:
I tried out an iMac while at UT (oh, what a fine looking machine ) - I'd really go for one of those, except I think the portability of a laptop is something I need more. I tinkered with it for 5 minutes or so, and although I'd obviously need to experiment with it more indepth before I did purchase one, I liked it.

Cool.

If you want to get an idea of some of the latest mac stuff, watch Jobs' last Macworld Keynote. He demos most of the software that comes standard and you can fast forward the boring bits.

I like Garageband. I bet I'd like it even more if I were a musician.

I hope they'll let you have a go.

If you do get a mac and are a student, you will be able to get Office 2004 at student pricing. It's an excellent piece of software, and I recommend it.

I've no clue.

I'd honestly avoid the G-series...

The lowest I'd go is the R-series.

And honestly, if you're on a budget, go Dell or Toshiba. There's more value for you there.

Erm, you qualify for MS academic pricing regardless of platform.

The UofC offers most MS software legally for PC absolutely free. Including Visual Studio Enterprise, which usually costs thousands of dollars

I just wish other companies would try to match the exterior appeal of Apple. I'm going to aim at testing some of these out in person, and see how they feel.

If you want to buy a fashion accessory, go Apple.

If you want to buy functionality and utility, go IBM.

If you want bang for your buck, go Dell/Toshiba.

Do Dell do a 'warehouse' type thing over there, stuff like returns etc, it knocked £100 off my 1150 Inspiron.

Put an end to popups!

I think Apple shows you can have "fashion" and functionality. And the iBook is pretty good bang for your buck, from the reviews it has received; not as much as what Dell and Toshiba have, of course, but it doesn't lag far behind.

And on a sidenote, is there a schedule for when new laptop models are released?

Agathon, I enjoyed the part where Steve Jobs finds a "bug" on his comp during his demonstration. What bad timing for the comp to freeze.

There should be new laptops on their way out right now.

Intel just released a new Centrino platform.

And I don't see how it's "easily bypassed" -- the thing comes with one touchpad button...you can't add another.

IMO they should've used the Black Eyed Pea's original version called "Let's Get Retarded", not "Let's Get It Started" before Jobs got on stage.

Some of my software is actually legal now.

For some of these schemes you do need to pay a nominal annual fee(20 - 30$) though but you can download ANY MS product of your choice (not games and there is a max download ).
You're even allowed to use as them long as you want, so even when you've finished school.
Do note that an academic version of Visual Studio for example will not allow you to build a stand-alone executable...or so I am told.

I've never seen that clip of Jobs' Mac locking up.

It's awesome. It's particularly awesome because for all of the crap we hear about how stable and sophisticated MacOS X is, it's clearly not.

It's also great because I remember all the harping Bill Gates got from all of the Mac-heads when his Windows screwed up in a demo, too.

There was a better one a few years back when someone forgot to charge his digital camera and screwed up his presentation on digital photography. He was almost swearing.

Did you see John Mayer and Garageband? That's pretty cool.

Nonsense -- it clearly became unresponsive. He was hitting buttons and trying to quit out, nothing happened.

It's either a lockup bug which took down OS X, or it's not easy to use.

The Toshiba M30 looks pretty cool. Don't know if its in your price range, though. I'm more and more sceptical about Dell. A friend of mine got one. When he types a bit too hard, the touchpad senses it and the cursor moves. A pain in the ass. He called Dell. Their answer? We can do nothing for you.
