If youre abbas trying to survive from week to week, thats probably enough - the longer term issues of Iranian power in Lebanon can be deferred.

Let's just hope that we aren't using the crap that's going on in Lebanon as an excuse to strike out at Syria.

We've bitten off more than we can chew and need to take care of the problems at hand instead of name calling, or adding more hits to the list, like Outposts of Tyranny, or Fortresses of Oppression, or whatever dumbass high school intern marketing slogan is being used by the State Department this week.

I don't know if it is starting to implode but it does seem likely that Syrian allies are behind the assassination of the former Prime Minster. The guy was an out spoken critic of Syria and continually called for Syria to remove its occupation force; next thing you know he ends up dead.

Chirac has to many Arab voters to consider to do something like that. He knows Hezbullah is nothing but a bunch of terrorists but he couldn't even admit the sky is blue without the French-Arabs turning on him.

Of course Hizbollah is undermining the peace process. They´re islamist fundamentals that don´t want peace. You can´t talk to fundamentalists, you can only undermine their base of power. [misunderstanding edited out]

But Hezbollah's base of power is not the regular Palestinian people. That is the base of power for the Palestinian authority. Hebollah's base of power are Shiite fundamentalists from Iran.

The discussion in the EU is about the political branch of the hamas (hezbollah?).

The position of France is that calling political Hamas terrorists would be counter-productive.

How I understand the position of France is:
Outlawing only the armed branch is sending the message to the Pals of
"You are allowed to be nationalist, but not through violence", while outlawing both branches would send the message "You are not allowed to be nationalist".
A little bit like Spain did with the ETA: split the political from the military branch. Allow nationalism, not armed nationalism.

The topic is rather old and regularly, US and/or Israel ask EU to add the political branch in the list.

Here is something from already 25 Aug, 2003:
