From memory that was a secretive section of Starfleet that specialised in Black Ops and was essentially above the law - above and beyond most of the more shadowy aspects of CIA during its heyday.
IIRC it was introduced in the mid-seasons of DS9.

I thought it was a great concept in principle but unfortunately most of the episodes seemed to revolve around the particularly irritating doctor playing at being a superspy.

I say push the timeline into the future 50 years past Voyager/DS9. That way the writers get rid of the crutch of having old cast members re-appear and can advance the story without violating the Star Trek "canon". There's plenty of Universe left to explore (One more quadrant, right?).

I have trouble imaging a show about section 31, the org was sooo dicredited in DS9....

About big battles -I love to see them to, but they shouldn't overdo it, IMO the development of the scale of space battles was reasonable in Enterprise (although I have to say we are currently at the third seaon here). Anyway, lots of big battles all the time and from the start of a series could become boring too. Space battles should become gradually bigger to the end of a show IMO.
Most important IMO isn't to have hundreds of ships participating, but how good space fighting is made in the end (fx, "camera" movement, cuts etc.).

Hm, the latest StarTrek series was/is (?) definately far superior to its predecessors. The music theme, though subject to criticism from today´s techno/metal/punk youth, is IMO a highlight in the new concept!

It lines out what the show is about: A new era is about to begin, mankind takes the first steps in leaving the cradle that is earth! The crew is "green" in terms of alien contact, which is always a big PLUS, the technology is not that far advanced compared to TNG, all in all the whole series is more plausible

Now I don´t know whether that will change during the later seasons, since it´s relatively new here in Europe, but what I have seen so far is the best StarTrek ever

Scott Bakula is great as captain, he has that "kirk touch" but still creates an individual feel to it. Jolene Blalock (the Vulcan chick), as outlined before, is a perfect Number One in both looks and acting
Also most of the other actors fit perfectly into the setting, adding lots of different perspektives

Of course seeing a captain work in the slave mines of some brutal alien race is another step "back to the roots", creating a more human aura to the captain´s figure. (Who could imagine old Picard performing slave labour? )

Younger actors -> more action, less static episodes ->

(Although Captain Jonathan Archer is 51 )

Put the show to sleep for a decade, then continue on the same trend as Enterprise S4

I.e. get rid of all the existing staff and use lauded Trek fiction and non-Trek sci-fi writers and producers to write and produce the episodes and give us interesting storylines (original yet firmly founded in the incredibly rich Trek universe) and interesting character developments and relationships (that go beyond showcasing tits&ass).

Theme, premise and character names/genders/species are not really all that important. Good writing is...

Anyway, a bit more skin (female preferably) wouldnt hurt the cause. But what it really need is a whole new concept. Like, in the beginning, Star Trek hat the transporters. Then came the holodeck. Now it needs something new...

It harps on and on and on about "my soul". Star Trek is supposed to agnostic at worst and atheistic at best. No "my soul", please.

I want a traditional grand orchestral theme, not metal/punk and most definitely not techno.

Unless, of course...

I have a book entitled "The physics of Star Trek" which, in detail, describes Trek things using actual physics. And might I add that such a show would be boring indeed
